The big thing to take from our first top 10? Nobody knows anything yet. Two of our preseason top four don't even make the top 10 (including preseason #1 Desert Vista), and our #2 this week wasn't on ANYBODY's radar during the preseason. Might want to save this one and look back on it in March, could change drastically.
5A PrepAZ.com Top 10:
#1 Highland: A unanimous choice for our writers, Coach Burns is working his magic again.
#2 Chandler: Where did these guys come from, and how long can they keep it going?
#3 Trevor Browne: Inconsistent play means these guys will lose a few they shouldn't, but with Morrison in the middle they'll always have a chance.
#4/5/6 (3 way tie) Brophy, Corona del Sol, Desert Mountain: A logjam in the middle of the top 10, all three schools have started hot, the question is who can keep it going the longest. Brophy has the deepest backcourt in the state, Corona del Sol is finding instant success under Sammy Duane Jr., and Desert Mountain just plays smart, hard, and as a unit, they might have the best team play so far in this young season.
#7 Mountain Ridge: Quaintance and Bittl got them off to a 6-0 start, but they're loss to St. Mary's showed that someone else will have to step up to keep them going.
#8 Marcos de Niza: Capable of beating anybody in the state on any given day-also capable of losing to any team in the state on any given day. Might not be enough shots for all this talent to be happy.
#9 Mesa: With Graham Hatch out this team is vulnerable, but when he comes back they should move back up this list.
#10 Mesa Mountain View: A defensive juggernaut, playing playoff style basketball in December. Do they have enough scoring?
On the bubble:
Salpointe: There will always be questions about the strength of schedule, but Sulgiac and Clarkson can definitely play.
Deer Valley: It's all about Lawrence Hill, if they get the ball to him inside this team can compete, if not, they're just average.
Also receiving votes:
Gilbert: Never count out a Bennett coached team.
Desert Vista: We're not ready to count our preseason #1 out yet, but rookie Head Coach Doug Harris is having some growing pains.
Dobson: Fundamentally sound, big, but they haven't played anybody yet.
St. Mary's: Balanced, but any team led by a freshman point guard (Jerryd Bayless) is suspect.
Paradise Valley: Chitwood is a monster inside, but does he have any help?
