CLASS OF 2004: MAURICE WELLS
Man on the Boards
A first look at Maurice Wells and you would ask yourself, "Why is this young man on the basketball court?" Standing 6'4" at 219lbs, Wells displays the physique that of a linebacker or tight end chiseled from head to toe. In the mode of let's say Tony Gonzalez he is just that.
On the gridiron he is known to catch a clutch pass for a first down or use one hundred percent effort in chase of a quarterback from his defensive end position for a key sack. This effort has led Wells to verbally commit to the University of New Mexico Lobos on a football scholarship after attending Cienega High School in Vail, Arizona.
Currently Maurice is leading the Cienega Bobcats basketball team in scoring at 15pts per game and has shown the ability to post double, double statistics night in and night out with this being the schools second year of Varsity athletics. Wells leadership will be needed to lead a relatively young Bobcat squad in the SOAZ Kino 4A division.
Maurice is the younger brother of Mike Wells who attended Sahuaro High School in Tucson and is currently a sophomore playing college basketball at Cochise Community College in Douglas, Arizona. The Wells family has contributed greatly in the last few years to SOAZ sports.
Mike's goal on the court is to have a successful season and help his team reach the state playoffs that Cienega missed by one game last year. He is feeling the ill affects of this past football season and trying to get in basketball shape to give a true semblance of himself by playing good defense and leading his team in rebounding.
Against Cholla high school this past week he put down a thunderous dunk that leads me to believe that he is almost there. With this being his third year of varsity basketball, one at Sahuaro and two at Cienega, the sky's the limit.
Only time will tell if Maurice is successful in leading the Bobcats to their first ever Arizona state playoff berth.

With great positioning he is a monster on the boards. Forced into the post area because of team height he has more than adequate explosive moves that produce points or a trip to the free throw line. Has the ability to step out and hit the short-range shot. Maurice is the consequential team player that only leads by example.
