Mtn. Ridge Flattens Sandra Day O'Connor

Mtn. Ridge - The rain coming down outside at the end of this game could have signified the tears running down the cheeks of anyone affiliated with Sandra Day O'Connor High School, a new 5A school. Sandra Day O'Connor was thoroughly beaten by the Mountain Lions of Mountain Ridge High School.

A poor showing was on hand to watch the domination by Mtn. Ridge. Domination may be an understatement; it appeared to be men versus boys on the court tonight. After a brief 3-3 tie, Mtn. Ridge jettisoned out to a 23-5 lead behind excellent ball movement and numerous fast breaks. J.D. Bittl, a senior point guard, spearheaded the attack with unselfish play, dishing the ball off to teammates more often than going for the basket. Ridge's frontcourt dominated the boards while the backcourt controlled the fast paced tempo. After an Austin Martin lay-up at the buzzer, Ridge was on top after one, 25-5.

The tempo of the game severely slowed down as the second quarter commenced. None of the starters for Mtn. Ridge started the second quarter, the closest scoring quarter of the game. Ridge only outscored O'Connor by two points, 11-9, in the second quarter. The teams went into the locker room with the scoreboard showing Mountain Ridge - 36 - Sandra Day O'Connor - 14.

There was one name prevalent in the third quarter. Mtn. Ridge's Josh Morrow took control of the game, nailing shots from everywhere and collecting rebounds as well. Morrow had ten of his game high 14 points in the third quarter to lead Mtn. Ridge to a 59-21 advantage after three. Josh Morrow, only a sophomore, stands in at 6-4 and plays a well-rounded game, look out for him in two years.

The fourth quarter was characterized by sloppy play by both squads. Together they totaled nine turnovers in the fourth, the majority being Mtn. Ridge's. After a Mtn. Ridge 12-0 run to start the fourth, Sandra Day O'Connor went on a 6-0 run to end the game and the pain. The massacre concluded with the score 73-30 in favor of Mtn. Ridge.
