Desert Vista vs. Mountain Pointe

Packed gymnasiums mean one thing - rivalry game.

Ahwatukee, AZ.
Many rivalries exist in the state, and none get more heated up than Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe.  Last night was no different.  With a capacity packed house at Mountain Pointe, an animated announcer who loved to hear his own voice, and two rabid student sections - this one was everything you could have hoped for.
The game started out with a technical on Desert Vista for dunking during warm-ups, and Mountain Pointe quickly put up 5 straight points for an early lead.  The rest of the first quarter was tight and DV led going into the second quarter 11-10.  DV continued to build their lead during a well-fought second quarter and went up at half time 36-24.
Half time at this rivalry was almost as much entertainment as the game.  Both student sections taunted each other, and MP background music drowned out the DV cheer squad.  The third quarter was all Mountain Pointe, outscoring DV 23-8.  The place was rocking in high gear heading into the final period with the score 47-44 in favor of home team MP.
Everyone in the building knew what was in store for the final period.  "Stall Ball".  Even the announcer took it into his own hands and described Mountain Pointe's game plan to the entire audience.  With what seemed like a huge lead of 5 points with only a few minutes left, new DV Coach Harris put the X-Man at the top of the defensive to force things, and it worked.  Desert Vista regained the lead, and then an incredible steal and lay-up by senior Josh Jolin in the final 30 seconds sealed a victory for Desert Vista.  Mountain Pointe had one last possession to tie the game, but stifling defense by the thunder stopped them from getting a good look.  Final Score 57-54.
DV soph PG Julliaan Irvin made his first game appearance of the season and made an impact.
Mountain Pointe has talent, and it was clear why they beat a tough Trevor Browne team.
Desert Vista travels to Deer Valley on Thursday for a major test. Mountain Pointe stays in region play with a game at Corona on Friday.
Top Scorers: DV Kilby 14, Jolin 13. MP Arreola 22, Berrelleza 14.
