5A-4A Top 10

#1 was easy. After Mesa beat #7 Mt. Ridge and #1 Mesa Mt. View in the same week anybody could have figured that out. But in a week where it seemed like every big program lost the rest of the Top 10 took a little figuring out. Top 10

At first glance it looked like a week where the Top 10 was in for a massive shakeup, but after a second look it became apparent it was just one of those weeks. A week where everybody lost. Everybody, that is, except our new #1, the Mesa Jackrabbits.

#1—Mesa—A good win against #7 Mt. Ridge, then a huge win over #1 Mesa Mt. View. This was a no doubter. After beating the #1 team in the state two weeks in a row Cummard, Komenda, Hatch, LeBaron, Crowell and Head Coach Shawn Lynch are #1 with a bullet.

#2—Mesa Mt. View—Beat Red Mountain early in the week, then lost a nailbiter to Mesa on Friday. Still a one loss team, but now #2.

#3—Brophy—Three wins, including one over #10 Horizon, prove the suddenly shorter bench isn't hurting the Broncos.

#4—Deer Valley—Beat North Canyon and Maryvale, but drop a notch after Desert Vista rudely reminded Lawrence Hill and company that Deer Valley isn't the only ‘DV' in the state.

#5—Highland—Bounced back this week with wins over Mesquite and Gilbert, hang tough in the fifth spot with upcoming road tests against slumping Chandler and surging Hamilton.

#6—Dobson—Beat Westwood and Skyline, as they should have, to hold the #6 spot.

#7—Salpointe—After a week where seemingly every good team lost the Kings of Tuscon jump back into the top ten. A huge game Tuesday hosting Brophy will either bring respect or more grumbling about being the biggest fish in a small pond.

#8—Trevor Browne—Just when we think TB's done and gone they catch a sliding Mt. Ridge team at the right time and reenter the Top 10. Now if they can just find a loophole in the rules that allow them to play with three basketballs at once…

#9—Hamilton—The third new entry into the Top 10 this week Brian Schaeffer seems to have gotten everybody on the same page with wins against Gilbert and Casa Grande. Upcoming games against Highland and Chandler will prove if these guys are for real.

#10—Horizon—A slow start from Rishi Kakad cost the Huskies against Brophy, but wins against Marcos de Niza and Desert Mountain keep them in the Top 10…barely.

On the bubble

Mountain Ridge—Have lost three in a row, but they were against Trevor Browne, Mesa, and Deer Valley. Should win out in January before starting February with Horizon, a rematch against TB, and Deer Valley.

St. Mary's—Wins against Paradise Valley and North Canyon keep them in the hunt, but Jarryd Bayless has to beat somebody big soon to justify the hype.

Desert Vista—With Julliaan Irvin healthy this team looks like the #1 we tabbed them as during the preseason. The Deer Valley win was huge, a couple more big wins would be nice, but outside of two with an overachieving Corona del Sol squad their schedule is weak the rest of the way. 4A Top 10

#1- Greenway: Still #1 but the top slot could be changing very soon!

#2 -McClintock: Waiting for another opportunity to claim #1.  March might be the best time to claim it!

#4 - Page: Alumni Matt H. is making Page proud at the Farm in Palo Alto.

#5 - Shadow Mountain: Winning but will have to wait to make a move up the ladder.

#6 - Scottsdale Saguaro: Low spot for the Sabercats.  Good win vs. Chaparral.

#7 - Thunderbird: Could be at peak at #7.

#8 - Pinnacle: 4A Tucson schools making SoAZ proud!

#9 - Coronado: Only 4A team to move up, one slot.

#10 - Scottsdale Chaparral: Loss drops to #10, but another dangerous team who will likely be a contender in March.
