Friday's 4A Quarterfinal Preview---Boys

Elite Eight is set for Friday night....

Here's a brief preview of Friday's games:

Saguaro vs. Greenway---Both #1 seeds so this game may be played at a neutral site.  That's the way the A.I.A. has handled it in the past.  The AZ Republic says the game is to be played at Saguaro.  I'm sure it'll all be worked out soon.Danny O'Boyle

Probably the best game on paper of the four match ups, certainly the two highest ranked teams to do battle.  Danny O'Boyle vs. Scott Mueller, Derek Tarapacki & Justin Ashbaugh vs. Jon Black……….lots of subplots.  May come down to coaching and who makes the better adjustments….Bob LaRue vs. Howard Mueller.

Millennium @ Catalina Foothills---Tucson's last chance to stay alive.  Foothills will have a tough time against the state's best point guard Ryan Holmes. But CF's Barrett Zeinfeld might be unbeatable himself.

Shadow Mountain @ Page---Another great game.  Page will be used to Shadow Mountain's running style as the Sand Devils have faced many Reservation teams.  Can the Matadors contain Page big man James Anderson?

Independence @ McClintock---This is an intriguing game.  Independence has the physical strength to muscle McClintock and some quickness that'll help contain rocket Jermaine Calvin.  Can the Patriots spring the season's biggest upset?  Probably not.

$$$Alright, let's review last night's McClintock/Chaparral game.

Chaparral was just happy to be there.  A year ago, the Firebirds lost 17 games.  This season they won 17 in a huge turnaround for the program.  Chaparral had mentally checked out of last night's game the moment they stepped into Doc Zinke Gymnasium.

The Firebirds came out flat and uninspired.  It was a major disappointment to all in attendance that we couldn't at least get a half game of competition.

McClintock is an awesome team.  Take nothing away from ‘Tock.  But Chaparral made the Chargers look like NBA All Stars with an embarrassing defensive effort.  At times, the ‘Birds made absolutely no attempt to defend ‘Tock and stood flat-footed in amazement of the speed and athleticism before them.

Jermaine Calvin is an amazing creature, not only lightning-quick, he's also fast.  I'll bet Calvin can run a 4.4, 40 yd. dash, maybe a 4.3.  When he gets the ball he's absolutely determined to get to the hole and uses this quickness/speed combo to run right past you. I can't think of any AZ prep guard who can stay with him defensively.

Even scarier, Calvin is in superb physical condition and is seemingly tireless.  This allows him to relentlessly attack.  He never quits coming at you.  If McClintock wins it all, it's because of Jermaine Calvin.

$$$There was a fairly decent crowd for the game but still not up to playoff standards.  Many folks bailed out early in the 2nd half when it was apparent Chaparral wasn't going to make any kind of effort to get back in the game.

$$$Now the tough choice, where to go Friday night?  Hmmmmmmmm.
