McClintock overcame 1st period jitters, then exploded on Independence to advance to the 4A Final Four with a 50-42 win Friday night at Doc Zinke Gymnasium in Tempe.

The Chargers were content to play street ball with Indy for a period and a half, but then came alive with a pressing, full court defense that turned the tide.

Indy led 13-7 after the 1st period.  The Patriots stretched the lead to 7 early in the 2nd with aggressive play coming up with nearly every loose ball and rebound.

But then the Chargers cranked up the pressure defensively.  Indy had no press breaker to counter ‘Tock's intense D.  That was the turning point of the game as McClintock closed out the half down only 25-22.

The 3rd period started with 4 Indy turnovers and sloppy defense.  McClintock took full advantage behind Marcus Nicholson's 5 crucial points……..an uncharacteristic 17 footer and a 3-pointer from the top of the key.

Jermaine Calvin and Gabe Freeman scored inside and before you could gather your senses, McClintock was up 36-27 with 2:00 remaining in the 3rd.  The game was essentially over as Indy scored only 4 points in the period.

Mc led at the end of the 3rd, 39-29.

The 4th period accented all the missed free throws by the Patriots.  Indy must have missed 15 charity tosses in the game.  Not that it would've made a difference in the game's outcome, it sure would've kept Indy closer.

‘Tock went into its spread offense down the home stretch and closed out the game with adequate free throw shooting.

$$$ Indy's Enoch Christian did a fantastic job on Jermaine Calvin defensively.  Christian held the state's quickest point guard to 9 points on the evening, a miraculous feat.

$$$ The gym was ¾ full, with a very enthusiastic crowd.  The McClintock students brought newspapers to the game and pretended to read them while Indy was being introduced prior to the game.  That's a creative stunt I've never seen before.  Very confident, very cocky………….and deservedly so.

$$$ Indy had the athletes to compete with ‘Tock.  More so than any other team I've seen.  But the Patriots lacked confidence in their ability to handle the press and that cost them the game.

McClintock showed an ability to quickly transform itself from a tit-for-tat player into a monster.  The way ‘Tock came out of a 2nd period timeout with a completely different defensive personality was frightening.  Not many teams can turn on the juice so quickly.

$$$No team 4A Final Four team can beat McClintock, I'm convinced after tonight's show.  Mail it in!
