Sharp-Shooting Aztecs Overcome South Mountain

The Girls 5A "Road to AWA"...

The phrase "Cinderella Story" is often overused in sports.  Too many times I have heard that a team is a Cinderella story when the fact is that the team in question is better than their competition.  But one could argue that the South Mountain girl's team is a Cinderella story.  The Lady Jaguars swept the Metro Region going 11-0.  Derrick Gray, in his first year as head coach, won Metro Region Co-coach of the Year.  Not bad, considering that he took the job just two weeks before the start of the season after Andy Fraga stepped down.

Shayla Henderson won Metro Region player of the year.  The junior forward averaged over 17 points, six rebounds and six assists per game.  Still, she was left off of the Arizona Republic's list of players to watch in the 5A state tournament.  Renetha Burton averaged 16 points and eight rebounds this season and made 1st team all Metro.  Keep in mind that Burton is a freshman.

The Lady Jaguars had a chance to carry their 11 game winning streak into the 1st round of the 5A state tournament as they took on the Lady Aztecs of Corona Del Sol, fresh off of an overtime loss to Desert Vista.

As usual, Pat Reed's team came out shooting.  Junior guards Sy Janousek and Amy Rosencrantz combined for 32 of the Aztec's 46 points.

South Mountain pulled to within nine points at the end of the third quarter.  But Corona Del Sol scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to seal the 46-33 victory.

The Cinderella run is over for the Lady Jaguars.  Their final record is 20-10.  But the future looks bright for the Lady Jaguars.  The only impact senior that they are losing is Whitney Young.  Henderson, Burton and the rest of this talented team will be coming back.

Corona Del Sol will move on to the second round to play Mountain Pointe.
