Toros and Lancers both seeking their 2nd victories
Tucson, Arizona- The Tucson Salpointe Lancers will be looking to avoid their 2nd straight home loss to a ranked non-conference opponent this Friday, September 17th when they face the (8)Mesa Mountain View Toros.
The Lancers, who won 14-7 on the road at unranked Gilbert Highland on
September 3rd, dropped their home and season opener, the week
earlier, against 4A (1) Tucson Sunnyside High School, 38-14. Lancers quarterback
Sean Brevaire is coming off a solid performance against Highland in which he
completed 15-of-27 attempts for 251 yards and a touchdown. Brevaire is yet to be
intercepted this season.
The Lancers (1-1) are averaging 14 points on offense, while their defense
yields an average of 22.5 points per game.
The Mesa Mountain View Toros are traveling to Tucson fresh off a 17-0 shutout
of (9) Gilbert High School, previously ranked 4th in the state. The
Toros dropped their season opener in a rematch of the 2003 5A State Championship
game against (1) Chandler Hamilton, 21-20.
Mountain View (1-1) is led offensively by quarterback Tyler Mack and the
running of fullback Alex DeVito, who scampered for 134 yards on 12 carries in
the victory over Gilbert.
The Toros defense is stingy, giving up only 10.5 points per game. They forced
Gilbert into six turnovers (4 interceptions and 2 fumbles) on their way to
preserving the shutout win last Friday.
In their last meeting, around this time last year, the Toros beat Salpointe 28-21 at Mesa, AZ.
