Pinnacle 35 - Payson 21
3 - 1 Payson traveled south to take on #8 ranked 4 - 0 Pinnacle in a 4A match up this Friday night. The game did not disappoint, as it was a tight contest till the end.
The first quarter remained relatively even until momentum swung Pinnacle's way with an interception by versatile Cyrus Igono. Igono returned the ball to the 41 yard line. Costly penalties by Payson (facemask, roughing the kicker) allowed Pinnacle to maintain possession and eventually Pinnacle scores on a 16 yard run by Igono. Extra point good, Pinnacle up 7-0. The Payson offense quickly answered, as they pounded their way downfield behind the running of Luke Apfel. Apfel completed this scoring drive with a 1 yard plunge. With the PAT, the scores is tied 7 to 7. Not to be outdone Pinnacle moves the ball behind Igono. First, QB Garrett Reed hits the back on a 34 yard screen pass. Later in the drive, Igono takes a swing pass 27 yards inside the Payson 10 and then Igono eventually scores on a 9 yard run. With the extra point this makes the halftime score 14-7 Pinnacle.
The 3rd and 4th quarters made for exciting football as the game took on a back and forth tone. The first big play came when Kyle Daggett and Zak Murphy of Pinnacle blocked a Payson punt, allowing Pinnacle to take over on the Payson 26 yard line. Two plays later Payson's Nick DeGroot returns the favor and picks off a Reed pass. This turnover is capitalized on when Apfel catches an 8 yard TD pass. PAT good, tie ball game 14-14. Later in the 3rd Pinnacle's Karlo Conn takes off 48 yards to put Pinnacle in scoring position. This drive is killed with a crucial fumble. Payson strikes quickly as Luke Apfel scores on a 43 yard TD run. PAT good, Payson 21 Pinnacle 14. Pinnacle quickly evens the score behind the running of diminutive RB Karlo Conn (5'6 135) a 34 yard scamper by Conn sets up a pretty Reed to Ciliberti 7 yard TD pass. PAT good, 21 – 21.
In the 4th quarter, the Pinnacle D steps up and puts the clamps on the Payson O. In the 4th, Igono takes off on a 51 yard touchdown run with the extra point Pinnacle is up 7. Payson is again forced to punt and on a critical 4th down play Pinnacle converts as Reed hits Igono for a TD extra point good, final score Pinnacle 35 Payson 21.
Bottom Line: Pinnacle goes 5-0 and managed not to slip as they prepare for a big, big, big match up with #2 Centennial next week.
Game Balls: Cyrus Igono showed what a multiple threat he is. 14 carries for 145 yards and 2 TDs. He added two 2 TD receptions and a big interception. In a losing cause, Payson's Cash Armstrong had 17 combined tackles and looked like one of the most impressive linebackers seen this year.
