Chandler V. Gilbert

Chandler remains undefeated.

Chandler 23 Gilbert 0

There was a lot at stake tonight in the game as Chandler walked in with an undefeated record (5-0) and a chip on their shoulder. There were many claims that Chandler was not every thing they were hyped up to be because of the "easy schedule." While Gilbert, wanted to stay above .500 and not fall behind going into region play. Well, Chandler won tonight behind a very strong defense and proved to everyone that they are for real.

The Wolves defense started strong from the get go. They held Gilbert to 3 and out on their 1st possession and forced a turnover on their 2nd. Chandler LB Reno Blomquist forced a fumble that was recovered by fellow LB Ricky Moore and returned to the Gilbert 3. This would set up a 3 yard Reno Blomquist TD run to put Chandler up 7-0. The whole 1st quarter was filled with turnovers as Gilbert fumbled two more times and Chandler fumbled and threw a pick in the 1st quarter.

Chandler continued the turnover trend when James Richardson fumbled on Chandler's 1st possession of the 2nd quarter but the Wolves got things turned around on their next possession. QB Brad Johnson lead his team down the field and a nearly flawless 8 play drive capped off on a 9 yard Johnson to Richardson TD pass. On the drive, Johnson completed passes of 14, 9, 19 and 9 yards respectively to put Chandler up 13-0. Both teams continued to pay tough defense the rest of the half and the score at half remained 13-0 in favor of Chandler.

Chandler's offense came out in the 2nd half in a hurry. They scored on their 3rd play from scrimmage when Johnson hit RB Ryan Coleman for an 81 yard touchdown on a boot pass. This put Chandler up 20-0. Gilbert tried to answer with their big FB Bobby Ili but the Wolves stacked 8 in the box and basically forced Gilbert to pass, which is not their strong point. Chandler continued to play sound defense and beat Gilbert at their own game. They ate up most of the clock in the 3rd quarter when they went on a 13 play drive that all but ended the quarter. The drive was lead by a 3-headed rushing attack of Blomquist, Coleman and Justin Sims.

It was much of the same in the 4th quarter as Gilbert could not muster up enough offense to make a comeback. Chandler took advantage of their speed and put a ton of heat on the QB. DL Joey Duncan contributed 2 sacks and Reno Blomquist sacked QB Aaron Weise that forced a fumble that would lead to Chandler's final score; a short Darren Sweely FG to make the score 23-0 and end the game.

Bottom Line: First off, Chandler has one of the most impressive defenses that I have seen this season. They are big, fast, physical and can really hit. CB KB Stevenson, LBs Reno Blomquist and Ricky Moore all played outstanding. They forced 5 fumbles and lined up in a 4-4 defense that was perfect for stopping Gilbert's run game, which was nearly inexistent except for a few nice runs by Ili and Weise. Chandler was also able to play great field position. Punter Darren Sweely placed 3 punts inside the Gilbert 10 yard line. This meant if Gilbert wanted to score, they would have to run the entire length of the field. I would not count Gilbert out. They will be able to pound the ball on teams especially with a backfield of Ili (6'2 235) and FB Derek Smith (6'2 215). And their defense actually played well despite the score. They were on the field A LOT and actually stopped Chandler on many occasions. Chandler QB Brad Johnson was very efficient and looked like he could play at the next level. I also thought WR James Richardson

Game Ball: The Chandler D. 5 fumbles, enough said.
