Chandler v. Mesquite

Chandler 23  Mesquite 5

The #3 ranked Chandler Wolves (7-0) and the 3-4 Mesquite Wildcats took the field on a rainy night on what was not expected to be much of a game with Chandler on such a hot streak and Mesquite QB Erik Archuleta being questionable to play tonight.

From the start it looked like it would be a long night for the Wildcats. Back-up QB Jake Walker would start the game only to be forced to punt after 3 plays. Chandler would follow on a 76 yard scoring drive that was lead by RB Reno Blomquist. Blomquist would have 5 carries for 54 yards on the series including an 11 yard TD to make the score 7-0 after the PAT.

The Chandler defense forced another 3 and out on the next possession but Mesquite tightened up and forced a 3 and out of their own. Things started to look up on the return as Saunders Montague took the punt 60 yards deep into Chandler territory only to fumble and have Chandler recover. The fumble was forced by KB Stevenson and recovered by Darren Sweely.

Chandler was not able to take advantage of the turnover and Mesquite entered the field lead by their QB Erik Archuleta. Things started out was as Archuleta scrambled for an 11 yard gain and found Montague for a 37 yard strike that put the Wildcats into scoring range. The Chandler D held and forced a field goal that was short to keep the score 7-0. Chandler took over from the 20 and was not able to move the ball. On the punt, the snap was bad and lead to Mesquite's only score of the half, as Sweely covered the ball in the end-zone for a safety. This made the score 7-2 in favor of Chandler at the half.

Mesquite opened up the 2nd half kicking but gained possession when K Jeff Scafria slipped, fell and squibbed the ball and Mesquite recovered. Nothing would materialize and the Wildcats were forced to punt. Chandler opened up with a steady dose of Reno Blomquist. Blomquist would lead his team on another scoring drive that put them up 10-2 after a 31 yard Sweely FG. At this point in the game, Blomquist already had 134 yards on 15 carries.

Mesquite followed up with a scoring drive of their own and made the score 10-5 after a 21 yard Scafria FG. But this would be the only points Mesquite would manage. Chandler continued to feed Blomquist as he would lead the Wolves on two time consuming drives, scoring drives that put the game out of reach. The 1st score was a 14 yard Brad Johnson to James Richardson TD that made the score 16-5. And Blomquist added another score when Johnson would find him for a 4 yard TD strike. This would make the final 23-5.

Bottom Line: Chandler's offense struggled at times but their defense played tough and only allowed star WR Saunders Montague 3 catches for 59 yards. Two of those catches came in the last minute of the game. Reno Blomquist finished with 218 yards on 28 carries and helped Chandler dominate the time of possession.

Game Balls: Chandler RB Reno Blomquist 2 scores and 218 yards rushing. Chandler DL Shawn Cade harassed Archuleta all night, getting several sacks and TFLs.
