Maryvale 33 Goldwater 13
These two teams met tonight with identical 5-2 records and both looking to get the upper-hand in the Northwest Region race. Maryvale could not take advantage of good field position after a short kick and turned the ball over on downs. Goldwater acted quickly, as QB Brian Harvey took the second play 56 yards to make the score 7-0 after the PAT.
But this was the only offense Goldwater would muster in the 1st half as Maryvale answered with a 10 play 62 yard drive to tie the score. RB Jermaine Williams marched them down the field and QB Oscar Navarro found Jose Gutierrez on a 22 yard TD strike. A bad punt gave Maryvale good field position and it only took Navarro 3 plays to find Ronald Huckaby for his 2nd score of the night. Navarro hit Huckaby for a 43 yard TD pass to make the score 14-7. Maryvale was able to add one more score before the half as Huckaby got in another score when he ran 16 yards to paydirt. The score was set up when Jermaine Williams forced a fumble that was recovered by Gutierrez. The score at the half was 21-7 Maryvale.
The 2nd half was filled with penalties from both teams. Neither team could overcome the penalties to take advantage of the good field position they both had. There was only one score in the 3rd quarter and that was another Navarro to Gutierrez scoring strike that covered 58 yards and made the score 27-7.
The 4th quarter saw the two teams exchange scores. Goldwater struck 1st and looked to be back in the game when RB Joe Bognar scored from 2 yards out. His score was set up by a 50 yard Dan Bayus run to the 3 yard line. The score was now 27-13 but this is as close as Goldwater would get as Jermaine Williams scored from 27 yards out to make the score 33-13, which was the final.
Bottom Line: Maryvale could be a dangerous team in the playoffs. They have enough speed and talent to be a force when they are clicking. Jermaine Williams can not be taken down be 1 or even 2 defenders and Jose Gutierrez is a quality WR. Goldwater has great size. Robert Irwin is HUGE at 6'8 340. Jr OL/DL Scott Stewart is 6'5 290 and needs to be watched next year. I also like the way RB Dan Bayus, LB Matt Loewen and DE Brandon Ford play. The problem with Goldwater is they only dress 27 players and are forced to play most of their kids both ways.
Game Ball: Jermaine Williams had a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, over 100 yards rushing and a TD. Gutierrez had 2 TDs and a fumble recovery.
