Paradise Valley 30 St. Mary's 16
St. Mary's struck early in this class 5A showdown with an 11 yard touchdown pass from Dante Johnson to John Means (McShane extra point good). Paradise Valley's offense, which has an arsenal of players such as Clapp, Muhammad, and Leahy, was nullified in the first quarter. Clapp and the Trojans finally put some points up on the board early in the second quarter with a 26 yard touchdown run (McCellan extra point missed).
With just over 2:30 left in the half, Paradise Valley was at the St. Mary's 24 yard line and in scoring position again. The Trojans seemed sure to score until St. Mary's DB/WR Means picked off a Barela pass in the end zone. The Knights were forced to punt with just over a minute left in the half. Paradise Valley made the most out of the time and was able to squeeze in a last second 34 yard field goal (McCellan).
HALF St. Mary's 7 P.V. 9
Once again, St. Mary's put the first points up on the board in the second half with a 22 yard field goal (McShane). Just a few minutes later, Johnson hooked up with Means again… this time for a 77 yard touchdown pass (Means 65 yards after catch). Extra point blocked by Paradise Valley. Although Paradise Valley's offensive arsenal had remained relatively quiet, they were about to explode and St. Mary's would not be able to recover.
With seconds ticking down in the third quarter, Trojan QB Barela got his first touchdown thanks to an amazing catch by WR Andrew Leahy (McCellan extra point good). Leahy would then make another huge play in the fourth quarter by intercepting a deep touchdown-bound pass. The Trojans took over at the St. Mary's 47 yard line. After some good running by Muhammad, Clapp finished off the drive with a one yard TD run (McCellan extra point good). The final nail in the coffin came on a tipped interception by Clapp which he returned 45 yards for a touchdown (McCellan extra point good).
FINAL SCORE Paradise Valley 30 St. Mary's 16
The Paradise Valley defensive line played very well. Their DB's however, could use some work on tackling. One big TD got by their secondary because of a missed tackle, but better teams will make them pay. Matt Clapp is a great runner if he can break through the defensive line. This was very rare though. He showed his incredible speed and athleticism on the interception and a few catches. Pretty good arm on St. Mary's Dante Johnson. Good size target and good hands in John Means.
