Sunnyslope Vikings vs. Thunderbirds Chiefs

On a wet and soggy night at Thunderbird high school, the Chiefs and Vikings were set to do battle with playoff implications on the line for both squads.  Because of the conditions going into the game one might feel that Sunnyslope's aerial attack might be grounded but that proved to not be the case.

Taking the opening kickoff the Vikings marched down field taking the opening drive and quickly moving the ball.  Using multiple formations Sunnyslope on a critical 3rd and 11 play called a fullback screen to Michael Jaycox that was set up beautifully, and resulted in a pick up of 18 yards and a Vikings first down.  Next play speedy wide out TJ Campbell takes a fly sweep for a gain of 11 yards resulting in a first down for Slope.  Jaycox than takes the ball straight up the gut on a simple dive play makes a move and outruns the defenders 26 yards to the house.  PAT no good 6-0 Slope.  Thunderbird tries to respond to the scoring drive with a drive of their own.  Big play of the drive was a boot play that quarterback Cody Wilt takes and scrambles around a bit, makes a few guys miss and after a pick up of over 20 yards has the Chiefs offense moving.  However, the Sunnyslope defensive line turned up the intensity.  Wilt tries to roll out but he is sacked by Travis Williams forcing Thunderbird to punt it away.  End of the 1st quarter Sunnyslope 6 Thunderbird 0.

Don't blink you might miss the next couple of scores.  Quick hitch to TJ Campbell for a 14 yard pickup, followed by Jaycox up the middle with a huge run, tack on a personal foul facemask penalty and the Vikings quickly move the ball into the red zone.  Sunnyslope quarterback Ben Hornbeck fakes the end around to John Stalcup and finds a wide open Tyler Peterson in the end zone for another Viking touchdown.  Two point conversion no good 12-0 Slope.  After forcing Thunderbird into a three and out, Slope wide out TJ Campbell takes the punt and returns it 37 yards to the Chiefs 14 yards line.   On the very next play Hornbeck drops back and throws to Stalcup who leaps and brings down the ball resulting in a Viking touchdown.  PAT good 19-0 Slope.  Thunderbird takes the next possession and gets a couple of first downs however, Wilt is picked off by Campbell who has a nice return, add on a penalty to the end of the run and Sunnyslope is cooking inside Chief territory.  Couple of plays later Sunnyslope runs a wheel route to Stalcup who leaps and hauls it in from 26 yards out for the score.  PAT good 26-0 Vikings.  On the ensuing kickoff T-Bird had its highlight of the night, faking the reverse and taking it down the sideline 70 yards knocked out of bounds inside the 30 of Sunnyslope.  The Vikings defense sacks Wilt a few more times and forces the Chiefs to punt it away again.  The next series went like this Jaycox left for a pick up of 19 yards, a quick out to Campbell who makes a move and turns on the jets for a gain of 39 yards,  two plays later Hornbeck hooks up with Campbell on a out and up from 39 yards out touchdown Slope.  This drive covered 92 yards on 4 plays taking only 32 seconds off the clock.  PAT good 33-0 Slope going into half.

In the second half of the contest Sunnyslope turned to the running game to try and run the clock   Thunderbird was able to move the ball and gain several first downs on some quick outs to wide out Cole Forbgred.  The Chiefs move it inside Viking territory and go for it on a 4th and 6 but Wilt is sacked again this time by, Jeremy Fitzgerald and Eric Gouvide giving the ball back to Slope.  On the very next play Hornbeck is picked off by linebacker Jordan Jewel giving some life to the Thunderbird sideline.  However, Wilt is sacked a few more times and the Chiefs are forced to punt.  3rd quarter ends just as it began Sunnyslope 33 Thunderbird 0.

4th quarter starts with the Vikings turning to their ground game using the fly sweep style of offense it was Stalcup on the sweep than Jaycox up the middle followed by Campbell on sweep, very impressive moving the ball on the ground.  After a roughing the kicker penalty on Thunderbird the Vikings have it 1st and goal on the 7, in a two tight end full house back field Jaycox takes it off the right side and into the end zone PAT good Slope 40 Chiefs 0.  Thunderbird using some underclassmen moves the ball on the ground as freshman quarterback Chris Womak leads the offense all the way down the field.  Rolling to his right he throws to Zack Richards who leaps and makes a spectacular one handed catch for the only score of the night for the Chiefs.  PAT good 40-7 Slope

Final Score  Sunnyslope 40  Thunderbird 7

Bottom Line:  Sunnyslope's offense is downright scary when clicking on all cylinders.  Using multiple formations and having two real studs in John Stalcup and TJ Campbell at the wide out spots is a tough match up.  The Vikings are a team on the bubble when it comes to the playoffs but, if they do get invited to the dance their offensive firepower will make them a scary opponent for anyone in the first round.

Game balls:  Sunnyslopes offensive stars, quarterback Ben Hornbeck who connected on three scoring strikes.  WR John Stalcup who continues to put up huge numbers with two more scores and eclipsing the 1,000 yard mark for the season.  WR TJ Campbell, a touchdown and interception on the night not to mention a good job handling punt and kickoff duties.  RB Michael Jaycox who rushed for over 140 yards and reached pay dirt twice.  Sunnyslopes defense who collected 9 sacks on the evening and keeping Thunderbirds offense off balance.
