Basketball Is Here - November 1 2004

Every player across Arizona will step onto the court today and begin their 2004-2005 season. Who will end up on top? Plus 2 more "standouts" at the Fall Showcase this past weekend...

It is finally here! November 1 2004. The opening of tryouts around the State for boys and girls hoops.

This season looks to be the most exciting in years with a Nationally ranked team, Deer Valley (11th overall in the Country), the most ever Division I early signings on the boys side, and interest in girls hoops at an all time high. will feature game coverage, player breakdowns and the 411 from "Small Ball" , Girls hoops and our standard #1 coverage in Arizona for "Large Ball".

Our pre-season Top Ten lists will begin November 21, as well as our pre-season All-Arizona Teams for both the boys and girls.

Speaking of Top Ten lists, again I'll go out on a limb and say, Horizon High School is my sleeper to cut down the 5A nets come 2005 with Deer Valley the obvious choice for #1, defending champ Mesa High #2 and St. Mary's with super soph Jerryd Bayless and newcomer TJ Torpercer (6-7) #3. After that look for Mesa Mt. View, Brophy, Dobson and a hand full of others to make a run.

Good luck to all the Arizona hoopsters lacing them up today and remember, "PLAY HARD". 6th Annual Fall Showcase:

Great event showcasing a number of "unknowns". Our complete breakdown begins tonight but here are 2 who caught our eye yesterday.

  • Adam Foard. 6-4 - 2G - 2006 - Tucson Sahuaro
Can shoot it from DEEP. And I mean shoot it. This kid dropped 3's all weekend long. The big plus for Foard is he can defend, handle the ball and score in traffic as well. And, he can create his own shots, catch and shoot it and nail it off the dribble which makes him a rare find in the High School ranks. He needs upper body strength but a year in the weight room takes care of that. Mr. Foard has elevated himself into a pre-season top 5 SoAZ player. Great performance for this solid 2G from Sahuaro.
  • Robert Krauel. 6-3 - W - 2005 North Canyon
Plays hard every play. Scores inside the paint against bigger stronger players. Finishes, can shoot it from 17 and takes the ball to the rack with hops, confidence and no fear. Mr. Krauel proved he can play with anybody. Was consistent all weekend. Fatigue was not an option for this North Canyon future 2005 All Region player. Will dump 25+ on any given night this season. One to watch this season.

News and notes from the showcase

It seemed that all the Arizona Juco coaches made an appearance this past weekend. One thing for sure, there are a lot of potential NCAA DI players in the State that two years of juco ball will help their development.

The Grand Canyon men's team watched parts of the competition, and probably realized 15 players in the event would give them a game, if not win 4 out of 5 times.

Athletes abound. A high number of big time athletes are evident in the State this year. Height is missing as always, but the number of athletic wings and guards prove to make 2004-2005 an "above the rim" season for Arizona Hoops.

Be sure to check back all week long for player breakdowns from all 3 events held this past week, The Arizona Preps Fall Showcase, the Discovery Camp and the Tucson Shootout.

Again, will be the #1 source the Arizona Prep Basketball season 2004-2005.
