It seems like the games just started, but the fact is, this is it the end of the regular season! As such, the games this week are full of great story lines and playoff implications.
One of the biggest off season football stories had to be Channing Trotter moving from the Westwood attendance area to the Red Mountain attendance area. When that happened many Warrior fans were concerned, as one of the top all around players in the state moved to another school. To their credit, Westwood lined up, concentrated on football handed the reigns to talented juniors Brice Wilkins and Jay Leal and now is the undefeated #2 ranked team in 5A. Thursday night Westwood has a chance to secure the Fiesta region title with a win over Trotter's # 8 ranked Mountain Lions. Trotter also did not miss a beat, continuing the all around play that makes him one of the top offensive weapons in Arizona. Trotter is currently on a tear, averaging over 225 rushing yards a game over the last four games.
Friday night coverage is highlighted by a monster 4A match up of undefeated teams. The #2 ranked Centennial Coyotes travel to take on the # 4 ranked Cactus Cobras. This game has it all: undefeated teams, top players, rivalry, region championship and playoff ranking. Although both teams are undefeated, they have taken very different routes. Centennial has not been tested since an early season game with Chaparral, whereas Cactus has been involved in numerous tight battles. The key match up is how the Cactus D controls the Centennial run game. WOW!!
The Friday night classics continue as 5A #6 Chandler travels to #5 Hamilton. Two weeks ago this was the potential game of the year. That was before both teams ran into the hot Highland Hawks. Although some of the shine has been taken off of this game. The game is still very important as the teams wrestle for a good playoff seed. X and O gurus will love to watch how the Hamilton offensive staff game plans for the quick Chandler D and how the Chandler defensive staff plans for the three headed offensive monster of Dixon, Wesley, Englebrecht.
Friday's big games just keep rolling with a Westside 4A grudge match as Agua Fria hosts Millennium for the West Valley region championship. In all likelihood the winner moves on to playoffs and the loser stays home. This game is a showcase for some of the top underclassmen in 4A. Agua Fria's sophomore QB Mitch Wolfe and junior WR Nick Martinez have become a top passing duo and Millennium's junior RB Aaron Gentry is one of 4A's most consistent offensive players with over 1,100 yards of total offense.
Friday coverage continues with bonus games including undefeated 4A #4 Flagstaff vs. rival Coconino and 5A #10 Corona del Sol vs. Desert Vista. This match up features two great, but unheralded backs in Desert Vista's Chris Brogdon and Corona's Blaise Johnson.
