The Agua Fria, Millennium football game had the story line of a classic. Grudge match, region championship and win or go home implications regarding the playoffs. Well, as we know there are story lines and bottom lines. The bottom line is the team that has the fewest turnovers and controls the line of scrimmage wins nine times out of ten and Friday night was no exception.
The first quarter started out promising for the young Owls. They were able to convert two Millennium turnovers into touchdowns. On Millennium's first possession QB Kirtus Brais was intercepted by Agua Fria DB David Baldanado. The Owls quickly got into scoring position after senior Donald Askew scampered thirty-one yards, putting the ball on the Tiger's three. Two plays later QB Mitch Wolfe hit Kesiena Otite on boot right pass for a ten yard touchdown. The PAT failed. Agua Fria 6 Millennium 0. On Millennium's second possession, they fumble the ball to Agua Fria near mid field. After moving the ball inside the Tiger twenty, Owl O-Coordinator Johnny Rodriguez dips into his bag of tricks and runs a fake dive option play. QB hands ball to dive back, dive back goes down the line and pitches to tail back. This worked to give Owl RB Kesiena Otite an eighteen yard TD. Agua Fria converts for two making the score Agua Fria 14 Millennium 0.
The second quarter begins with Agua Fria punting from its end zone. The combination of a short punt and nice return give the Tigers great field position inside the Owl thirty. The Tigers go to the ground game with tiny but effective RB Chance Priddy. Priddy eventually caps the short drive with a five yard touchdown run. The PAT is good Agua Fria 14 Millennium 7. On the ensuing possession Millennium's Dennis Givens picks off a Wolfe pass. The Tigers waste little time as RB Aaron Gentry takes off on a thirty-three yard TD run. PAT good Agua Fria 14 Millennium 14. On the next possession, Agua Fria is again intercepted, this time by DL Tony Lewis. Millennium quickly strikes as they set Gentry as a wingback and sweep him to the right side for a twenty-eight yard touchdown run. PAT good
Millennium 21 Agua Fria 14. On their next possession Agua Fria puts together a strong drive. The crucial play comes on 4th and 6 when Agua Fria elects to go for it and successfully uses the same trick option play that scored a TD in the first quarter. Two plays later Wolfe throws to the end zone for his favorite target Nick Martinez, who makes a nice adjustment and hauls in the seventeen yard TD. PAT good Millennium 21 Agua Fria 21. At the end of the half Agua Fria forces Millennium to punt and the Owls attempt to move the ball with little time left. From his own twenty-seven Wolfe is intercepted by Millennium LB Corey Forshey who returns the pick for a TD. PAT good halftime score Millennium 28 Agua Fria 21.
The second half starts much as the first half ended. The Owls have the ball and are moving only to have an interception give the Tigers a short field. Aaron Gentry puts together a nice series of runs and eventually scores on zone right from nineteen yards out. With the PAT Millennium 35 Agua Fria 14. Agua Fria is forced to punt on the next possession and the Tigers Gentry put to rest any hopes of the home team making a comeback as he takes off fifty-seven yards for a TD. Extra point good Millennium 42 Agua Fria 21. The remainder of the game sees one more turnover for the Owls and a field goal and TD for Millennium, making the final score Millennium 52 Agua Fria 21.
Bottom Line: As stated above, Millennium had less turnovers and the Tiger O-line dominated the Owl D-line paving the way for Gentry and Priddy to run at will.
Game Balls: Gentry and Priddy with the help of the Tiger O-line. Millennium ran a basic set of plays, counter and zone, nothing fancy but successful. Gentry and Priddy are the type of backs who follow blockers well and never let you get a square shot on them.
