Soar Through the Air
The Independence Patriots scored first on a 4 yard touchdown run by Michael Reyna. They missed the extra point to make the score 6-0 Patriots.
Flagstaff struggled to get things going
early. Then, on a 2nd and 10 from their own 11, quarterback Japhet Leviticus heaved a bomb to Davawn Peterson for an 89 yard score to
put the Eagles ahead 7-6. From then on, the Eagles never looked
back. The Patriot's next drive went three and out, and the Eagles got the
ball on their own 17. They marched the ball down and scored on a 21 yard
touchdown pass from Japhet Leviticus
to wideout James Brooks.
Eagles were up 14-6. Independence took the kick off to the 20 yard
line. The Patriots fumbled on the next play and Flagstaff High recovered
on the Patriot 19. Eagle running back, Michole Cottrell took a pitch to the
right and it looked like he was going to pass, but he didn't see anyone open so
he took off down the Patriot sideline and made it 19 yards to the end
zone. With 51 seconds left in the half, the Eagles were up 20-6, and they
weren't done yet. The Patriots got the ball and made a nice return to
their 40 yard line, but they fumbled again and the Eagles recovered and took it
to the 31. On the second play from scrimmage Japhet Leviticus threw for his third
touchdown of the night to Davawn
Peterson making it Peterson's
second touchdown catch of the night. The score at the half was 26-6 with
the Eagles on top.
The third quarter was filled with failed fourth down conversions for both teams. The ball went back and forth as no one could get any momentum.
Early in the fourth quarter Japhet Leviticus hit Davawn Peterson one more time for a 52 yard touchdown. The extra point was good and the score was 33-6. After more failed attempts to move the ball, time ran out, and the Eagles clinched a second round game in the State playoffs. Flagstaff High finished off the night with 168 yards on the ground, 233 yards in the air, and 401 total yards.
Player of the game: Eagle wideout Davawn Peterson who finished off the night with 3 catches for 172 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Bottom Line: The Eagles had too much for the Patriots and now face a tough second round match up with Moon Valley. This should be a classic offense vs defense match up.
