The Best of 2004

The Best of 2004 heading into 2005... Best of 2004 (November/December)

Best Team Large Ball (5A-4A)

Mesa - Defending State Champions. Yet to lose. A lot of talk about Mt. View, but until the Jackrabbits lose they are #1. LeBaron, Hatch and Komenda provide the best threesome in Arizona!

Best Team Small Ball (3A-1A)

Scottsdale Christian - Is there really any doubt? Maiden and co. are the real deal. We hear at think Maiden is a top 3 PG in the State. Texas San Antonio is getting a good one.

Best Underachiever

Horizon - Our sleeper pick who has continued to struggle. Big man Phil Benson coming off the bench, Kakad not getting his looks. 6-4 swing Jim Casey holding them together.

Best Overachiever

Desert Vista - After a State Championship appearance, and the loss of Xavier Kilby and Travis Gabbidon the Thunder where cast off as a rebuilding bunch. But the exceptional play of 6-6 Johnny Pinto and the catalyst 5-9 PG Julliaan Irvin this crew of youngsters has won game after game. Don't be fooled, their young pups are solid, but any success falls on Pinto and Irvin.

Best Coaching Job

Paul Murphy - Agua Fria
Is it a job or a passion? In Coach Murphy's case… the latter. Murphy has turned the Owls into one of the best programs west of I10. Look for Murphy to land a "high profile" gig in the near future.

 • Top Player By Position

PG - Kal Bay - Marcos de Niza
Nobody has lead their team to bigger wins. Top play maker heading into 2005.

2G - Graham Hatch - Mesa
Has proven he owns this slot.

SF - David Burrows - Mt. View
Burrows has carved out his place in the elite status of Arizona High School Basketball. Does whatever it takes to win.

PF - Lawrence Hill - Deer Valley
Hill is unmatched when it comes to skill, athleticism and smarts. Stanford bound.

P - Michael Strittmatter - Brophy
Has become the best post in AZ. Active, desire, mental toughness = steal for Princeton

Travis Lebaron - Mesa - No flash. Coach on the floor
Devin Stewart - Santa Rita - Quietly putting up POY SoAZ numbers
Jerryd Bayless - St. Mary's - Living up to pre-season billing
Christian Polk - Deer Valley - Injury has prevented Polk to shine. 05 will be different
Lawrence Westbrook - Chandler - Can create like no other. Nobody can argue this kid has the skills. 40+ a game no matter how many shots is difficult to accomplish.
Kaleo Kina - Trevor Browne - Heart and will to win is unmatched in AZ. The Navy got a steal
Joey Shaw - Deer Valley - Top 2005 College Prospect adjusting to new home.
Trey Townsend - North - Northridge signee has quietly put up 1st Team All State numbers.
Johnny Pinto - Desert Vista - Can we get some respect please! This kid is getting it done for the Thunder.
