Arizona Cagers Black 17U Take BCI Crown

Cagers Black win it on last second shot over Team Phoenix 17U. The Cagers Steve Hudson (Greenway) named Outstanding Player of the tournament....

The Arizona Cagers Black 17s held off a late rally by Team Phoenix 17s and won the BCI Boys Spring Tip-Off (high school division) championship with a thrilling 78-76 victory at Grand Canyon University, Sunday, April 10.

The Cagers Black (7-0) jumped out to a 41-32 halftime lead behind Rodney Browns 16 first half points. Brown finished with a game-high 28 points.

Team Phoenix (6-1) coached by Dave Williams stormed back taking a 59-53 third quarter lead as Chas Neal scored nine of his team high 24 points in the third quarter.

The Cagers Brown answered with 11 straight points to start the fourth quarter including three three-pointers, taking a 69-53 lead. Team Phoenix battled back and cut the lead two, 78-76, with 3.2 second remaining. Neal then forced a turnover on the inbound and after a substitution, Team Phoenix was unable to hit a three-pointer for the win.

Rodney Brown (St. Mary's) led all scorers with 28 points followed by Tournament Outstanding Player Steve Hudson (Greenway) with 14 points and Skyler Whitfield also with 14 points.

Team Phoenix was led by Neal (Westview) with 24 points. Nick Ghiz (Marcos de Niza) finished with 13 points followed by Jamie Grim (Mountain Pointe) with 12 points.

April 11. 2005
The game of the tournament came in pool play on Saturday at Central High School as the Arizona Cagers White 17s broke the BCI Spring Tip-Off scoring record with a 120 point performance.

The Cagers defeated the Arizona Wildcats 120 - 86!

Both teams combined for a BCI record 35 three-pointers.....Mark Dornik (Mesquite H.S.) led the air attack with 10 three-pointers for the Wilcats finishing with 36 points. Jeff Dornik (it runs in the family) finished with 6 three pointers and 20 points in the loss.

Arizona Cagers finished with 17 three-pointers including five from Omar Meziah (Tucson H.S.)who finished with 29 points, four from Brian Hampton (Hamilton) 18 points.

"This was one of the strongest tournaments in Arizona since BCI nationals back in the '90s," said Justin Peterson, tournament Director. "I just wish more people knew about what was going on in their own back yard (BCI basketball in Phoenix, Arizona)."
