Player Spotlight: Dorian Smith

Interview with Basha Center

Last season, Basha center Dorian Smith had a breakout year for the young Bears earning honorable mention all state honors. This season he looks to lead Basha into their 1st full varsity schedule. Dorian is currently ranked the #17 OL on the 24-7 top OL list.

24-7 As an OL, what is your favorite block to make?

Dorian Smith: Down block, this really can catch the defensive tackles off guard.

24-7: What is your official height and weight?

Dorian: 6'2 247lbs.

24-7: What is your greatest football memory?

Dorian: I would probably say there are two thus far. 1-Even in the loss to Palo Verde (NV), I really realized that I can play against some of the best players across the country. 2-Winning the Independent Championship game would be the second.

24-7: What are your goals for the upcoming season?

Dorian: To help put Basha Football on the map and work hard to be the best lineman in the state of Arizona.

24-7: How are you preparing for the upcoming season?

Dorian: Spending a lot of time in the weight room and on the football field working on my speed and agility.

24-7: Will you attend any camps this summer?

Dorian: I am participating in the Nike Camp on April 17th, but am also going to attend a lineman camp at either LSU or Colorado State.

24-7: What aspect of your game have you really worked hard to improve? What area would you like to keep improving on?

Dorian: Foot speed and staying lower than my opponent. I want to continue to work on blocking in the second level (downfield).

24-7: Who are some of your teammates that people need to watch out for?

Dorian: Josh Barkley, Shane McBurney (QB), Steven Yena, Will Ewing and Kyle Flannery (LB).

24-7: What are your goals regarding playing football in college?

Dorian: I hope to have a chance to play in a Division 1 program and make an immediate impact.

24-7: Who is currently recruiting you?

Dorian: LSU, Tennessee Tech, Clemson, So. Mississippi, Kentucky, Maryland, Hawaii, New Mexico, Cincinnati, Colorado, Nevada and Washington.

24-7: Do you have any offers yet?

Dorian: Not yet.

24-7: Would you consider staying in state to play in college?

Dorian: Yes, would love to have a chance to play here in Arizona.

24-7: At this time, what would your top 5 college choices be?

Dorian: New Mexico, Tennessee Tech, Maryland, Hawaii and Clemson

24-7: Who is the best player you ever played against? Why?

Dorian: It would no doubt be the linebacker from Palo Verde, his name escapes me, but he was one tough kid.

24-7: What other sports do you play?

Dorian: Wrestling (qualified for the State the last two years) and Track & Field (shot and discus).

24-7: What are your best lifts in the bench, squat, power clean and 40?

Dorian: Bench 300, Squat-300, Power Clean 225, 40-5.2 (working to get under 5.0)

24-7: How do you think your coach would describe you as a player?

Dorian: I think Coach Mac would say that I am hardworking, loyal and a leader.

24-7: Describe Coach McBurney for those who have never met him.

Dorian: Not only a great coach, but a great person. He not only wants us to excel in sports, but in life. He has our best interest all the time and we can go to him with any situation and get the right direction to go. (Tells bad jokes).

24-7: Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Dorian: Charles Haley (former 49er & Cowboys) He controlled the defensive line. I would love to try and block him!

24-7: What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Dorian: I would say there are two things that stick with me. 1- My grandfather told me to always do my best in everything that I do, and if I just happen to fail, I really didn't fail if I learned something from that loss. 2- My old little league coach in Ohio had a saying that sticks with me about life, he always told us "Don't cheat, Don't quit" in all that we do.

24-7: Tell us what can we expect from your team this season?

Dorian: To be very competitive every time that we step on the field. A lot has been said about us moving to 5A this year, but we as a TEAM still have the same jobs to do.

24-7: What are you expecting headed into your team's 1st full varsity season?

Dorian: I think that I and my teammates will come to play every Friday. We are going to upset some people that think we can't compete. I know that next year will be my senior year, and I am so excited to step it up!

24-7: What can a college program expect from you as a player?

Dorian: To work hard on the field and in the classroom. To use every ounce of energy to help represent the program well.

24-7 would like to thank Dorian for his time and wish him luck during the upcoming season. Anyone wishing to contact Dorian may email
