Player Spotlight: Cole Graybill

Interview with Brophy Linebacker

Brophy LB Cole Graybill comes into the 2005 season as one of the most hyped and anticipated players in AZ. Cole has been a message board legend for nearly two years but few have seen him play because last year he transferred and played in Texas. The staff at 24-7 has only seen a little bit of film on Cole but it was enough to peak our interest. With his size and speed, he will get plenty of looks from recruiters but his play on the field will determine if he moves up from the #9 LB list on the 24-7 Top LBs. What were your stats and honors from last season?

Cole Graybill: First team all region/district 6-4a (outside linebacker). I had around 68 tackles, 3 FF, 1 Fumble recovery, 4 knock down passes.  I played OLB for only 8 games out of 11, two of the games I played receiver where I had about 3 catches for 25 yards.

24-7: What is your official height and weight?

Cole: 6'2½, 230lbs.

24-7: What is your greatest football memory?

Cole: Going 10-0 and winning the District 6-4a championship, and beating rival Brownwood.

24-7: What are your goals for the upcoming season?

Cole: My number one goal is to help and push my teammates in the off season so we can be a state contender next year. Also I want to be a role model to the younger guys so they can learn to be team leaders in the following years.

24-7: How are you preparing for the upcoming season?

Cole: I am training with Alex Semenik, who has also trained Ekom Udofia, Loren Howard, and Kyle Caldwell.  I also train at Brophy everyday; we have a pretty serious program.

24-7: Will you attend any camps this summer?

Cole: I will for sure attend the Nike Camp at Stanford and the ASU camp, and maybe the Boston College camp or the TCU camp.

24-7: What aspect of your game have you really worked hard to improve?

Cole: I have really worked hard on improving my speed, flexibility, and my leg strength.

24-7: What area would you like to keep improving on?

Cole: My speed and flexibility.

24-7: Who are some of your teammates that people need to watch out for?

Cole: Mike Callaghan (S), Tyler Chastain (DE), Blake Behrens (OL, DL), Matt Smith (WR), Mike Giannola (WR), Rahnee Dennard, (RB) Steve Pursley (OLB, FB), Connor Hearne (QB), Andrew Serrano (LB), Mike Bair (OLB), Alan Hunter (DB) Rashad Barnett (DE).

24-7: What are your goals regarding playing football in college?

Cole: I want to get a scholarship, and work as hard as I can to gain respect on the team. I want to strive to be as good or better as my competition and hopefully earn some playing time early in my career.

24-7: Who is currently recruiting you? Do you have any offers yet?

Cole: Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA, USC, Oregon, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, TCU, Miami, Iowa, Boston College, Tulane, Nebraska, and Wyoming.  I have not received any offers.

24-7: Would you consider staying in state to play in college?

Cole: Yes I would stay in state.

24-7: Compare Texas and Arizona football:

Cole: Texas football is much more serious than Arizona. It is life, kids grow up in the town dreaming that one day they will be able to wear a football jersey to represent there town. Football is all year around, there is no basketball or baseball, just football. If your team is winning, you are treated like gods, but if you are losing you get no respect. I compare Texas high school football to college level football, it is really that intense.

24-7: What would your top 5 college choices be?

Cole: Arizona State, Boston College, Texas Tech, TCU, Arizona.

24-7: Who is the best player you ever played against? Why?

Cole: Lee Grimes (OL) from Brownwood HS, Brownwood, TX. At 6'8, 340lbs, he is the best linemen I have ever faced. He is strong, fast, and quick. He has signed with Texas A&M.

24-7: What are your best lifts in the bench, squat, power clean and 40?

Cole: Bench: 340, Squat: 480+, power clean: 315. My 40 is 4.7 flat.

24-7: What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Cole: Don't cheat, or don't take the easy way out.

24-7: Tell us what can we expect from your team this season?

Cole: I think Brophy has a great chance at competing for a state title. I think that if there has ever been a year for Brophy to win its first state championship, this is the year.

24-7: What position do you think you will play in college?

Cole: Linebacker.

24-7: What can a college program expect from you as a player?

Cole: They can expect a hard worker that is willing to learn. They can also expect a player who attends every practice. They can expect a player who won't look for the easy way out and will achieve excellence in football and academics.

The staff at 24-7 would like to thank Cole for his time and wish him luck during the upcoming season. Anyone wishing to contact Cole, may email
