Spring Ball Recap: Westview

Look into Westview's Spring Progress

Westview had a good turnout with 126 athletes out for spring ball.  Lane Bernhardt (SR) looked solid at quarterback after starting the last 3 games of the 2004 season. He showed good leadership and control of the offense.  "Brendon Crudup (SR) has put on 15 lbs and is still running 4.57 and has done a great job moving from wingback to tailback" , according to HC Jeff Bowen. Brendon is also a returning all region punter.  Paul Patino (JR), returning all region TE, looked very good and is the team's leading returning receiver.  Lloyd Jones (SR), transfer from Tolleson, looked solid at fullback, a vital position in Westview's offense that has produced back to back 1400 yard rushers. Chris Roberts (SO) and seniors Mitchell Matthews and Chris Street are all playing the split end spot and Bowen likes Roberts because he has good speed and route running ability.  The wingback spot has a trio of Martin Guzman (JR), Nick Ramsey (SR), and Alex Cruz (SR) taking care of the reps there.  Cruz started last year on offense and defense for 6 games before tearing his ACL, he should make a full recovery. The offensive line looks to be two deep, solid with some quality young junior linemen coming from the 8-1 junior varsity team (they were 8-1 as freshman also).  The top returning Linemen for the spring were Kris Poindexter (JR, 2nd team all region both ways) and Leo Clark (JR) a returning starter. Brandon Williams (SR) moves from TE to guard and Edwin Hernandez returns and will move to guard along with Michael Ramsey who moves into the center spot.

Defensively, MLB Daniel Crowe (honorable mention all region as a sophomore with 91 tackles) returns from an injury that kept him out his entire junior season.  "Daniel has looked extremely motivated, fast and strong during the spring" , according to Bowen. Daniel is being looked at by many D-1 schools even though he missed his entire junior season. The other linebacker spots will be filled by Alex Cruz and Paul Patino with Martin Guzman, Lloyd Jones and Ethan Milton (JR) all looking for time.  The DL looks solid with the return of all region defensive end, Kris Poindexter and honorable mention all region DE Brandon Williams.  The secondary has two returning starters, Mitchell Matthews and Brendon Crudup. Filling the other spots are Mario Perez (JR, 2 nd team all region LB as a sophomore who is moving to the rover spot) and Nate Jones (JR, who was second in the state in the 110 high hurdles at 14.45)…Others that should see time in the secondary are Chris Roberts, Gabe Rubalcaba (SR) and Chris Street.

Overall, Bowen land the Knights have 12 returning starters some quality young players coming up from our 8-1 junior varsity team and our 8-1 freshman team.
