Spring Ball Recap: Independence

Johnson and Line Anchor Patriots

Last season the Independence Patriots put together a strong season as they made their run for the playoffs.  Head coach Kelley Moore feels his team completed their best spring in his three year tenure.

The Patriots will be lead by 2nd team All-State offensive lineman Diamond Johnson. Johnson paid close attention to his training this off season and was able to get his squat up to 475, his clean up to 325 and bring his forty into the 5.1 range.  Helping Johnson to anchor the line will be big tackle Gus Martinez.  Martinez has shown improved quickness now that he has brought his weight under 300 pounds.

Pat Cly and Ben Alonzo join Johnson and Martinez up front. This group will have the chance to open holes for two very exciting players. Speedster Marshawn Ross looks to continue where he left off as one of the top return men in the state.  On limited carries, Ross put together 6 TDs and nearly 500 rush yards.  Sharing carries with Ross will be Walter Peoples.  Last year the 6'2 187 pound Peoples was an All Region DB.  Taking over at QB will be hard nosed Paul Jaramillo.  Last year, Jaramillo played LB and FB.  Good skill people and an experienced line should allow Jaramillo some time to learn the position.

LB Jarrid Nash, DL/LB JJ Sanchez and DB Walter Peoples will lead the defense.  Moore has a large number of juniors on his squad and would like to build depth on both sides of the ball throughout the summer.  Indy wants to show that their 5-0 league record and playoff birth was not a one time thing.  That being said, 4A Division 1 Region IV may be one of the toughest in the state with defending state champ Moon Valley, state runner up Cactus, hungry Greenway and talented teams Apollo and Prescott.
