Spring Ball Recap: La Joya

Check into progress of newcomer La Joya

Let's give a little love to one of the valley's newest schools; La Joya. If you don't know where La Joya is, it is in Avondale on about 115th Ave and Lower Buckeye. They will be playing in the Desert West Region and will face region foes Tolleson and Westview next year, although they will not be playing a full varsity schedule. They will open up playing San Luis, O'Conner and Desert Ridge. Head coach Mike Waters and his staff realize that his kids are untested against varsity opponents and doesn't want to hype up his team too much but we figured it would be nice to fill in some people on the progress of the program.

As far as spring ball goes, Coach Waters couldn't have been happier.  They had a total of 121 kids show up for at least 1 day of spring practice.  They went for 3 weeks Monday through Thursdays with the highest number of kids being 89 on the last day.  They are thrilled with the number of kids that are involved in the program and considering their incoming freshman class is over 800 kids, they hope to have 175 kids in the program next fall.

As far as individuals results are concerned, Coach Waters feels like many of his kids are doing what it takes to prepare themselves for 5A football.  Some of the more tangible results are below along with some of the kids they think will help them next season:

Josh Cornist Senior QB / Wingback / DB 4.59 - 40
