Friday night at Surprise stadium, the South all stars led by Travis Dixon opened the game strong in the first quarter and never looked back. On the South's first drive, timely throwing by 24-7football.com player of the year Travis Dixon and strong running by Bobby Ili quickly moved the South down the field. With 7:26 left in the quarter Dixon hit Hamilton teammate and fellow all-star Mekel Wesley out of the slot for a 24 yard touchdown. Collin Murphy of Palo Verde added the PAT making the score 7-0 in favor of the South.
On the North's opening drive, Cameron Douglas of the South intercepted QB Brian Wriston. The South once again with the tough running of Ili and a timely 3rd down scramble by Dixon was able to move the ball to the North's nine yard line. Ili then scores from nine yards out on a nice counter play. The PAT was no good making the score 13-0 South. The North again turns over the ball, the fumble is recovered by Highland all-star Ty Porter, who was all over the field Friday night. The South goes to work quickly and Dixon soon hits NAU bound tight end Shaun Fitzpatrick up the seam for a 23 yard TD. The two point conversion try fails making the score 19-0 South. The South once again gets the ball and closes the 1st quarter scoring when Collin Murphy booms a 47 yard field goal, making the score at the end of the first quarter 22- 0 the south.
The 2nd quarter has NAU bound Austin Martin take over at QB for the North. In typical fashion Martin takes off on a 35 yard gain to get the North near midfield. Eventually, Martin hits Red Mountain's Channing Trotter on a middle screen. Trotter scampers 44 yards and gets the North on the board. PAT no good. South 22 North 6. The South again moves the ball following the game plan of the night, strong running by Ili and Herring along with timely passes and scrambles by Dixon. Dixon hits Salpointe wideout Jack Darlington in the right corner of the end zone. PAT good. This ends the scoring for the half at 29-6 in favor of the South.
The third quarter opens with Cienega's Sergio Velasco making a pick for the South. Then the North's Nick Miller of Red Mountain quickly returns the favor as he picks off his first of three Interceptions on the night. The only score of third takes place when Dixon hits Richie Brockel who breaks a tackle for a 48 yard TD. PAT good South 36 North 6.
The fourth quarter has Martin of the North hitting ASU bound Chris McGaha for a long 64 yard TD strike (PAT no good) making the final score 36-12 for the South.
Bottom Line: As with most all star games this one was sloppy with many turnovers. The key was the South's O-line dominating the line of scrimmage. Ili and Herring were able to run while Dixon had plenty of time to make plays. Ty Porter and Ryan McGinty were all over the place on the defensive side of the ball for the South. Nick Miller had three picks for the North.
