Hidden Gem: Luciano Gonzalez

Interview with Douglas linebacker Luciano Gonzalez

One player that is flying a under the radar is Douglas linebacker Luciano Gonzalez IV. After sitting out some games because of transferring last year, Gonzalez rebounded and had a solid season. Here is what the two-way player had to say…

24-7football.com: What were your stats from last season? Honors?
Luciano Gonzalez:
In five games for Douglas I had 72 tackles, 150 yards rushing and 12 punts with a 45 yard per punt average. I missed some games due to a transfer but I feel the move was good for me. I made Honorable Mention All region.

24-7: What is your official height and weight?
I am 6-0, 218 pounds.

24-7: What are your goals for the upcoming season?
Help my team to be playoff contenders, rack up at least 150 tackles, rush for 700 yards and get recruited by a school with positive academics and football programs.

24-7: How did you prepare for the upcoming season?
The Douglas coaches have a speed and agility camp as well as weight training that I attended all summer. I also went to the Nike Stanford Camp where I got a 75.74 SPARQ rating and also went to the Arizona Mike Stoops Football Camp. I learned some new things but mostly realized that I'm up there with the best in the country.

24-7: What aspect of your game have you really worked hard to improve? What area would you like to keep improving on?
My biggest improvement has been in speed. I've went from a 4.90 to a 4.60 40 yard dash on grass. I would like to keep improving quickness and endurance.

24-7: Who are some of your teammates that people need to watch out for?
They are all doing well but keep an eye on Jacob Tadeo (RB), Francisco Eribes (OL, DL) and quarterback Talbot Hudson.

24-7: What are your goals regarding playing football in college?
Playing on a good football program and excel on my knowledge of the game. Of course I want to get a good education.

24-7: Who is currently recruiting you? Do you have any offers yet?
Right now Arizona, Utah and Holy Cross are showing the most Division I interest. All of them want to see tape of my first couple games. I still receive frequent letters and emails from other schools but like other players who had an interrupted junior season, all seem to be waiting how I will perform this season. My coach says, "It looks like the doors are open and now I need to break through them with a dominating season". He should know; he played college ball for USC! All I know is; I'm going to try my best to enjoy my senior year and give my best effort each game.

24-7: Do you feel you are at a disadvantage recruiting wise by not play in the valley?
Yes, the metro areas always get more visibility and recognition.

24-7: What are your best lifts in the bench, squat, power clean and 40?
Right now I'm at 305 pounds in both bench and power clean. My squat is 445 and my 40 is 4.60 on grass.

24-7: How do you think your coach would describe you as a player?
My coach describes me as a fast strong "explosive" player with good talent and "untapped potential" as well as a great work ethic.

24-7: Who is your favorite athlete and why?
Emmitt Smith, He's fast, strong and explosive.

24-7: What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
"Hard work beats talent, if talent doesn't work hard."

24-7: Tell us what can we expect from your team this season?
We can compete at the state level if we execute every play to the best of our ability and play as a team. I don't want to see anything break-up our team brotherhood.

24-7: What position do you think you will play in college?
It all depends how I develop in college and what the coaches see in my abilities. Right now I'm dominant at middle linebacker but that can change since I can also play any linebacker position, fullback and punt.

24-7: What can a college program expect from you as a player?
A college can expect a focused and dedicated student/athlete with a great work ethic both on and off the field.
