Apache Junction v. Desert Edge

AJ rolls in season opener

Apache Junction at Desert Edge 8/26/05

In the 1st week of this 2005 season, I decided to head out to Goodyear and watch Desert Edge take on Apache Junction in their 1st game in their 1st full varsity season. It took the whole 1st quarter to shake the off-season cobwebs off, as neither team was able to muster up much of a drive or overcome their penalties that would keep scar the entire game.

AJ struck 1st, scoring on their 2nd possession of the 2nd quarter. The effectively used RBs Robbie Hernandez and Thomas Wolfe and marched 65 yards to pay dirt on just 6 carries. The drive was capped of on Wolfe's 22 yard touchdown run. The kick was no good and AJ had their 1st lead of the season 6-0.

The AJ defense then forced a punt after just 6 plays and the Prospectors found themselves in great scoring position with only a few minutes to go in the half. This time AJ went to the air as QB Chris Rodriguez hit big TE Cody Anderson for gains of 29 and 10 before hitting WR Justin Higuera for a 25 yard TD. Rodriguez and Higuera also hooked up for the 2 point conversion to make the score 14-0 at the half.

The 2nd half of the game was full of penalties, short runs and incomplete passes. Neither team was able to get much going until AJ recovered a Scorpion's fumble in the middle of the 4th quarter and go on a 14 play scoring drive. Rodriguez hit Higuera again, this time for a 27 yard TD strike and to lock up the game and end it 21-0.

AJ- 21 DE-0

Players of the Game

AJ TE/DE Cody Anderson had 4 catches for 68 yards, 2 batted balls, 1 sack that turned into a forced fumble.

AJ WR/DB Justin Higuera had 3 catches all for scores (2 TDs and 1 2 point conversion) and had an interception at the end of the game.

The AJ defense was great. They chased Desert Edge QB Chase Brunick all over the field and sacked him a number of times. He was never able to settle his feet and make a throw because pressure seemed to be coming from everywhere. I think DE only crossed the 50 twice in the game.
