Defending 4A state champion Moon Valley traveled to Chaparral to take on the Firebirds. On the first play from scrimmage Kyle Williams caught a pass up the seam for a seventy-eight yard TD and the Firebirds never looked back as they went on to defeat Moon Valley 45-0!! Chaparral put the game out of reach early in the second quarter when Spencer Rothery took off on the first of three touchdown runs. After Rothery's score the Rockets went three and out. Moon Valley then paid the price for punting to the speedy Williams. Williams took the ball at midfield moving to his left and down the sideline for a TD. Just like that Chaparral was up 21-0. This would be the score at half time. During the entire evening Moon Valley could not get on track offensively as Chaparral swarmed to the ball and played great team defense. The Rockets did not threaten to score the entire evening.
The second half began with Moon Valley turning over the ball on the opening possession as DB Charlie Campbell intercepted a Cody Bruns pass. On the next play Rothery took off on a twenty yard TD scamper. PAT good Chaparral 28 Moon Valley 0. Later in the third Brandon Rock scored on a touchdown run and in the fourth Rothery added another touchdown and Matt Boatman hit a thirty-six yard field goal. Making your final score Chaparral 45- Moon Valley 0.
Bottom Line: Chap is for real!! Kyle Williams is a threat to score every time he touches the ball and brings an edge of your set aspect to the Chaparral O. With that said the heart of the team may be Rothery's tough running and scrappy get to the ball defense. Matt Boatman made tackles all night and the defensive line should be commended for their play against a big and experienced Moon Valley offensive line. Moon Valley has talent but will go thru growing pains as Cody Bruns and Laron Harrington learn to carry the load for the offense.
Game Ball: Williams is the lighting of the Chaparral O but their strength may lie in the diversity of the offense. Rothery, Coleman along with Williams can make plays. Add in what looks to be an improved Neuenfeldt at QB and you have a tough 0 to game plan for.
