Friday Night Phenoms

The best in Arizona 9/2.

Finally!  After all the workouts, all the days spent in the weight room, it's time to finally play some football.  Every team in Arizona feels if they can get some breaks and if the ball bounces their way this just might be their year.  Well it's time to strap it up and get after it.  With week one in the books it's time for our first edition of, Friday Night Phenoms.

The 1st part of our Phenoms addition goes to the running backs.  Let's start out in the high country were Prescott's Chris Reed ran for 190 yards and 3 touchdowns in a 42-14 Badgers win over Bradshaw Mt.  Speedy North Canyon RB Sherrod Austin was able to contribute 202 yards and 3 scores on just 16 carries in a 23-12 victory over Marana Mt. View.  Over in Glendale, Greenway's multi-talented runner Kenton Thomas had 169 yards on just 13 carries; he also scored 3 times for the Demons.  Little Aaron Gentry RB from Millennium went for 226 yards on just 12 carries for a whopping 18.3 yards per carry average and oh yeah, he scored 4 times in a 42-26 Tiger victory.  Finally from the small school ranks Meyer's Alan Splitter had a great night going for 146 yards and 4 scores on just 13 carries.

The 2nd part of our Phenoms will focus on the boys who can take it out of the air.  Many people feel the Mountain Ridge WR Josh Morrow is one of the most underrated WR's in the state of Arizona.  Josh made his case with a very impressive 7 catches for 140 yards and a TD in a 24-20 Ridge win over Sunnyside.  Not to be outdone, Canyon Del Oro's Aaron Tevis hauled in 5 catches and 160 yards and also scored in a CDO 33-6 victory over Saguaro.

QB stat of the night belongs to Corona Del Sol's Chase Larsen who had an amazing night completing 17 of 23 attempts for 354 yards and 3 scores in a 41-22 Aztec victory over Tucson.

How about the guys who can do it all?  Top multipurpose games belong to these fine football players.  Remember this name, Prince Amukamara from Apollo high school.  The junior will be a major force for Coach Ed Barnes the next couple of seasons.  Last night Prince had 73 yards rushing, 65 yards catching he returned a punt 90 yards for a score and picked off a pass and returned it for another score in a 29-12 win over Lake Havasu.  Ironwood's Leonard Johnson returned a punt for a touchdown and also had a pick that he returned 90 yards to the house in a 38-21 Eagle victory.

You also have to play some defense to win football games.  Defensive performance of the night goes to the Westview nights.  The Knights D held Buena to just 137 total yards and only 4 first downs resulting in a 28-0 win.

That's the 1st edition of Friday Night Phenoms.  Look for it every weekend all year long.  Coaches if you would like to nominate one of your players or your teams' accomplishments.  Email me
