Friday Night Phenoms

The Best in Arizona

Friday Night Phenoms Week #2

This week's phenoms list really highlights the small schools around the state of Arizona.  So many times only the 4A and 5A ranks are given any kind of recognition.  We will still give mention the big schools this week, but we wanted to try and give the little guys some love.

Meyer's Rooney White starts us off this week with a very impressive night.  White only had 5 carries on the night but boy did he make them count.  White rushed for 109 yards and 3 scores averaging 21.8 yards a carry in Meyer's win on Friday.  Not to be outdone Valley Lutheran's DJ Lillard rushed for 358 yards and 4 touchdowns on only 18 carries, for a whopping 19.8 yards per carry average in a 62-27 win over Superior.  Joseph City's Eric Rice rushed for 144 yards on only 4 carries in other words 36 yards per carry average.  Those kinds of stats are only supposed to happen on video games!!!  Finally, Flagstaff's Mark Williams put up 254 yards and reached pay dirt 3 times in a 54-0 win over Dysart.

Moving on to the top all purpose games of the night.  Tolleson running back Derrick Woods had 96 yards rushing and a touchdown and also added 95 yards catching and 2 scores on only 2 catches, in a 28-20 Wolverine victory over Kingman.  How about Independence playmaker Marshawn Ross putting up 224 total yards of offense and 2 scores leading the Patriots to a 14-10 win over Glendale.  Back to the little schools, Hayden's Andrino Garcia scored on punt returns of 60 and 65 yards and also added in 85 yards rushing on just 6 carries during a 36-0 defeat of Benson.

Individual defensive state of the week goes to Mogollon's DJ McManus who had not one, not two, not three but four, count'em four interceptions in one game.

Team defense award goes out to the two time defending state champion Hamilton Huskies.  The Hamilton defense led by all state caliber players Gerald Munns and Dontay Moch held Paradise Valley to just 80 total yards of offense in a 41-0 win.
