Cactus v. Chaparral

Cactus makes claim as #1 team in 4A1

Cactus v. Chaparral

This game was definitely the most anticipated game of the week and it turned out to be somewhat of a disappointment. The 1st half was all Cactus and Chaparral was never able to recover.

Both teams seemed to have the jitters as fumbles ruled the 1st ten plays of the game. Chaparral's Kyle Williams fumbled the opening kickoff and his 1st carry but luckily would recover them both. Fumbles can be contagious and Cactus fumbled the punt after forcing a 3-and-out. Chap was not able to capitalize and the Cactus D played with a chip on their shoulder the rest of the game.

Cactus used short passes from QB Jon Tobin and tough runs from RB John Hart to come away with a 6-0 lead after two Ezra Ricks' field goals. Richard Morris made the score 12-0 with a 1 yard plunge midway through the 2nd quarter.  The TD was set up by a 48 yard David Pollock punt return to the Chap 1 yard line. Cactus would add another score with 43 seconds left in the half, when Tobin found WR Jordan Flores. The score at the half was 19-0 all Cactus.

The Cobras kept things rolling in the 2nd half, when Hart took the first play from scrimmage 65 yards to the house to make it 26-0.

Chaparral did not get on the scoreboard until midway through the 3rd quarter on a 42 yard Matt Boatman field goal. Chap QB Nick Neuenfeldt made the score 26-10 on a 40 yard run with 2 minutes left in the 3rd. Chap would get no closer as the Cactus D continued to harass Neuenfeldt and the O played keep away.

Final Cactus 26  Chaparral 10

The Cactus defense was awesome. They had 8 sacks. DT Danny Monarrez had 3 of them and played tough in the middle all night long. The Cactus coaching staff took dangerous Chaparral return man Kyle Williams out of the game. They squib kicked most kick offs and kept him in contain for most of the 1st half. Williams did have a big catch inside the Cactus 5 called back for holding. He was hurt on that play and saw limited time after that.

Tobin was very efficient all night. He threw short passes for good chunks of yards and most importantly made no mistakes. Backup RB John Hart was solid all night for Cactus.

Cactus is the most impressive team I have seen other than Hamilton.

Cactus defense- DT Danny Monarrez, LB Anthony Freeman and LB Mike Schmitt were all over the field. This defense is FAST.
