This week's coverage gives us a good look at some of the state's top players as well as the state's top programs.
Friday two of our games give us a chance to get a look at three of Tucson's best. First, #7 Canyon del Oro heads north to take on #2 Millennium. Both teams are undefeated so something has to give. CDO is lead by senior QB Ryan Lush who has passed and thrown for nearly 700 yards this season. To continue their winning streak Canyon del Oro will have to figure out a way to slow Millennium RB Aaron Gentry. Gentry is on a tear this season having already scored thirteen TDs. Down in Tucson, 5AII Sunnyside will host Sabino who is currently ranked #3 in 4AI. Sunnyside, having lost two of its first three games is in unfamiliar territory, while Sabino is 3-0. Glyndon Bolaskey has rushed for nearly 400 yards while Junior QB Justin Randall is completing over 60% of his passes.
We will have a classic 5A matchup as #5 Gilbert hosts #2 Mesa Mt.View. Ridge Nielsen leads the Toros averaging over thirteen yards a carry. Gilbert QB Kyle Newhall-Cabalero aired it out last week for nearly 200 yards while teammate John Coon ran for over a 100 yards. This one should be fun, hard, hitting football. Our other 5A game has #7 St. Mary's vs. #3 Westwood at Phoenix College. This is a rematch of what may have been one of the most exciting football games from all of last season. Thus far the Knights have outscored opponents 116 to 30. St. Mary's defense will need to bring it's A game to slow Westwood QB Brice Wilkins. Last week Wilkins threw for over 300 yards and is also always a threat with his legs.
Last, we will get our first look at Glendale as they host Sunnyslope. In 4AII Sunnyslope is currently ranked #3 and Glendale is ranked #6.
