This was not a pretty game to watch, Brophy was short handed and one dimensional while Westwood had penalties and turnovers late in the game that almost kept them from winning. With that said, the squads played hard throughout the game in a battle that saw Brophy win the first half and Westwood win the second half. The game started nicely for Brophy. After a long Rahnee Dennard kickoff return, the Broncos moved right down the field and scored on a four yard run by Dennard. The PAT was no good. Late in the first quarter, Westwood put together a solid drive, mixing in hitches and screens. QB Brice Wilkins converted on 4th and 5 with a scramble that eventually led to a Jay Leal seven yard TD run early in the 2nd quarter. Brophy retaliated in the second quarter with two scores. First, Nick Natale capped a strong Brophy drive with a two yard TD plunge. PAT good. A few minutes later Sophomore QB Bryan Berens hit Mike Gianolla in the right corner of the end zone for a twenty yard score. This time the PAT was no good making the score 19 to 7 Brophy at the half.
In the second half it looked like the Brophy offense would continue to control the line of scrimmage and trust the legs of Dennard and Natale. While moving down the field on their first possession, Brophy QB Bryan Berens threw a pick to Westwood DB Ricardo Garcia. The Warriors took advantage of this when they marched down the field and scored on a five yard keep from Wilkins on option left. Leal missed the PAT making the score Brophy 19 Westwood 13. Brophy then went three and out, again it looked as if Westwood would capitalize but their drive ended when Wilkins fumbled diving into the end zone from seven yards out. Later in the fourth, Westwood was again foiled when Jay Leal took off fifty-seven yards for an apparent score only to have it called back on a holding penalty away from the play. Late in the fourth, Westwood would again get the ball. Wilkins made multiple big plays on the Warriors final scoring drive. He converted a 3rd and 16 with a throw to Ty Nielson, converted a 3rd and 8 on a shifty scramble and hit Paul Mallory on a big slip screen to get the ball near the goal line. Eventually on 1st and goal from the eight yard line Wilkins hit Leal on a strike in the end zone scoring with twenty-three seconds left. Leal added the PAT. Westwood 20 Brophy 19. Brophy could not get down the field the last few seconds of the game making your final Westwood 20 Brophy 19.
Bottom Line: Early in the game it did not seem like much but missing two PATs cost Brophy. The turn around play of the game came when Ricardo Garcia picked Bryan Behrens. At the time of the pick, Brophy was moving the ball into Westwood territory and had the D on their heals. Brophy never threatened the remainder of the game.
Game Balls: Brice Wilkins, On the final drive, Wilkins was a D coordinators nightmare. He converted big plays with his legs and his arm moving the ball for the final Westwood score.
