Cactus v. Apollo
There was a track meet Friday night at Apollo and it was the Cactus Cobras doing the running. In what may be a first in a long time, Cactus scored no passing touchdowns.
Richard Morris got the stamped going wit a 1-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter. Morris soon followed up on the next possession with a 13 yard scamper around the right side. John Hart then scored on the next possession on a 24 yard run up the middle. Not to be out done Richard Morris came back with a 27 yard rumble for a touch down on the next possession. At the half it was Cactus 28, Apollo 0.
In the second half the Cobras continued to score early and often. Morris opened the third quarter with a 12 yard touch down run. David Pollock ran back a punt for a 61 yard TD. John Hart had another TD and back up quarterback Ryan Underwood had a 36 yard scramble for a touchdown to end the Cobra run-fest. Quarterback Jonathan Tobin was 5 of 9 for only 88 yards.
Final score Cactus 56 Apollo 0.
Not only did David Pollock run back a punt for a touchdown, he also had 4 interceptions in the game that all lead to Cactus touchdowns.
To the Apollo students who tried to show school spirit by dressing up and wearing face paint. For some reason they were then told to either change or leave the game. They got spirit yes they do, hey administrators how bout you?
The game was 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. Apollo was successful controlling time of possession and moving the ball. However, they could not punch it in from the red zone. Later, interceptions and good punt returns gave Cactus the short field all night. Put points on the board, control time of possession, don't give up the big play and don't make mistakes. Sounds like a formula for success against any team. Problem is that Cactus is not just any team.
