As we get into region play, many games take on great importance. One such game is a matchup between two Mesa schools as #3 Westwood travels to take on #2 Mt.View in an East Valley region show down. If you like teams that run the ball, this is the game for you. Both teams are solid on the ground. For Westwood, you can pick your poison as QB Brice Wilkins leads one of the most talented groups of runners in the state made up of Jay Leal, Kiegan Thompson, Cylend Simmons and Ricardo Garcia. Mt.View likes the ground game as well but it is highlighted by junior Ridge Nielsen. Nielsen has already gone over the 1,000 yard mark and is averaging an astounding fifteen yards a carry. Some key points to this game to watch for; first, who can stop the opponents run game. Both teams are solid on D. Westwood gives up around eleven points a game while Mt.View gives up around nine points a game. Second, watch to see if Westwood gets tired. Many of Westwood's top players play significant time on both sides of the ball. Third, Brice Wilkins ability to throw the ball. Last year Wilkins was one dimensional. This year he can beat you with his arm as well as his legs.
Moving to 4AI, #5 Greenway travels to Cactus to take on the #1 ranked Cobras. If you like lots of offense this Wells Fargo game is the one to see. Greenway, led by RB Kenton Thomas, is putting up nearly forty points a game on O. Cactus counters with QB Jon Tobin and RB Richard Morris. Cactus' diversified attack is also averaging nearly forty points a game. On the other side of the ball Greenway allows over twenty-six points a game while Cactus allows less than a touchdown a game.
