North v. Cesar Chavez
The 1st half of the game was penalty filled and poorly played as any significant gain by either team was negated by a penalty.
It wasn't until 2:33 left in the 1st half that any points were put on the board. Chavez DB Jamar Howard picked off an errant Erik Archuleta throw and returned it to the North 22. Eight plays later Chavez QB TJ Reid punched it in from 1 yard out to make the score 6-0. The PAT was blocked by North's Albert Pete.
North then went on a 2 minute 63 yard scoring drive behind the arm and legs off Archuleta. He completed passes of 9 and 10 yards to Max Moyes and Ramel Ross and made runs of 13 and 19 yards before diving in from 1 yard out. Gustavo Virelas bit the PAT and North Took a 7-6 lead into halftime.
North opened up the 2nd half with yet another penalty giving Chavez the ball at midfield. Chavez marched the 50 yards in 8 plays with runs from RBs John Holden and Terrence Brown. All of the running that Chavez does set up a perfect play action pass from Reid to Holden for a score. Brown added the 2-point conversion and went up 14-7.
The rest of the 3rd quarter was not kind to North. Chavez picked off Archuleta for the 2nd time on their 3rd play from scrimmage. The Champions went on a 10 play drive but were stopped just short of the goal line on 4th and goal from the 1. But it wouldn't take Chavez long to make up for the turnover on downs as Jarron Johnson picked off Archuleta for a 3rd time. This time it was returned 40 yards for a score and the PAT put Chavez up 20-7 at the end of 3.
North was finally able to get back on the board early in the 4th when Archuleta hooked up with Moyes for a 14 yard TD pass to keep hope alive.
Chavez used their ground attack to grind time off clock the entire quarter and their defense forced two more interceptions and a fumble to make Chavez the Metro Region Champions with a final score of 20-14.
North will still be a tough draw come playoff time. They have a lot of talented players. They were just plagued by penalties tonight.
Chavez runs the heck out of the ball. Reid, Holden and Brown run tough and their offensive line in physical. Tonight North stacked the box yet Chavez was still able to get 5 yards per carry. They don't have much of a passing game but I think they may surprise some people come playoff time.
The Chavez defense came up big. They forced 5 interceptions and recovered a fumble to hold North's offense to 14 points.
Chavez QB TJ Reid was huge. He had TDs in the air and on the ground and also picked off a crucial pass.
