The 6-2 Centennial Coyotes made a short trip down the road to take on the 6-2 Ironwood Eagles.
All night the Coyotes were able to capitalize on Eagle mistakes. Centennial scored first on a 70 yard Warren Johnson punt return. Ironwood's next offensive play was a pass that was intercepted by Jarrell Barbour and returned to the Eagle 22. A few plays later Zach Timberlin rolled in from 2-yards out for a touchdown. Coyote Tom Ramsey scored next with a D-lineman's dream, a scoop and score from 30 yards out. Ironwood fumbled again on their next possession. Sophomore Jeff Hughes scored on his first carry of the game on a 30-yard burst up the middle. Ironwood had no luck on their next possession as Jarrell Barbour intercepted another pass but this time ran it back 40-yards for a touchdown. Alex Zendejas had the only points for Ironwood in the first half with a 42-yard field goal. At half time it was 34-3.
Centennial would score twice in the second half. They took advantage of another Eagle fumble, which led to Jeff Hughes second touchdown of the night. Later, QB Shane Mascaranas hit R.J. Anderson for a 5-yard touchdown pass. Ironwood scored late on a QB draw by Luke Bakemeier. Way too little way too late. Final Score Centennial 48, Ironwood 3.
Bottom Line: Ironwood was not able to build on the close comeback they had last week against Maryvale. Against good teams one turnover can make the difference in the game. Against Centennial they had seven. Centennial was able to take advantage of Ironwood mistakes and made very few of their own. They looked like a team hitting on all cylinders going into the playoffs.
Game Balls: William Yancy of Ironwood. 5 tackles, several hurries, a tipped pass and a fumble-causing hit. For Centennial, Warren Johnson, Jarrell Barbour and Tom Ramsey for their special teams play and defensive touchdowns.
