Sunrise Mountain 29 Goldwater 26

Mustangs Earn Shot At #1 Seed Next Week

In a back and forth ball game between evenly matched squads, the Sunrise Mountain Mustangs came out on top 29-26 over the home standing Goldwater Bulldogs.  On the opening possession, it looked like it might be a long night for Sunrise Mountain as Goldwater drove down the field and scored.  The key play of the scoring drive came on 4th and 10 when Bulldog QB Brian Harvey scrambled out of the rush to find WR Nick Osick for a thirty-three yard touchdown.  The Bulldogs added a two point conversion to make the score 8-0.  Sunrise Mountain did not answer until early in the 2nd quarter when super receiver Curt Sweeney slipped behind the Bulldog secondary to score on a fifty-six yard TD pass from QB Ryan Moeller.  RB Cole Ptacek rammed home the two point conversion knotting the score 8 to 8.  The Mustangs would add a second score late in the quarter behind the running of Cole Ptacek.  On the scoring drive,Ptacek had runs of thirteen, eighteen, twenty-three and the scoring run of eight yards.  The PAT was good with a kick from Sweeney making the score at half Sunrise Mountain 15 Goldwater 8.

On the first possession of the second half, Sunrise Mountain QB Ryan Moeller turned the ball over on an interception.  Taking advantage of the situation Goldwater moves the ball to inside the five, where QB Brian Harvey scores on option left.  The PAT kick was blocked making the score Goldwater 14 Sunrise Mountain 15.  On the very next possession Sunrise Mountain and Ptacek answer as Ptacek takes off on a sixty-nine yard touchdown run.  PAT good Sunrise Mountain 22 Goldwater 15. Now it is Goldwater's turn to counter and counter they do.  Behind strong line play and the running of Dan Bayus, Brian Harvey and CJ Morgan the Bulldogs quickly move down the field.  Eventually Bayus finishes the drive with a one yard run for the score.  Two point conversion no good.  Goldwater 20 Sunrise Mountain 22.

In the fourth quarter, Goldwater scores first.  The Bulldogs finish off a seventy-nine yard drive when Harvey again hits Osick for a twenty-two yard TD pass on bootleg.  Again, the PAT is no good, making the score 26 to 22 Goldwater up with a little over four minutes left in the game. After a short kickoff from Goldwater, Sunrise Mountain starts their possession near midfield. Again, Sunrise Mountain puts their fortunes on the back of Cole Ptacek.  The senior RB wants to keep playing next week and on his second carry of the drive pops off a quick thirty-seven yard gain.  Two plays later  with 1:33 left in the game, Ptacek scores his third TD from three yards out.  With the PAT Sunrise Mountain takes the lead for good 29 to 26.  Game over.

Bottom Line:  Hard fought game between very equal squads.  If Sunrise Mountain wants to have a shot against North Canyon, a #1 seed playing good ball at the right time, the Mustangs will need to play tougher D.

Game Balls:  Ptacek ran like a man all night.  More importantly, on his way to three scores, he made plays when his team needed them.  Hats off and congrats to the Goldwater seniors for a solid season and good career.  Thanks.
