Maryvale v. Highland

Maryvale Holds off Highland

Maryvale v. Highland

Early in this game it looked as if Maryvale was gong to completely dominate. The Panther defense held Highland to 1 first down in the 1st half and forced 4 turnovers. Interceptions by Demetrius Stewart, Deyon Bowser and Robert Allen along with a fumble recovery by the Maryvale D led to a 28-0 halftime score.

The scoring in the 1st half included a 39 yard Ronald Huckaby to Noah Burkes halfback pass for Maryvale's 1st score. QB Oscar Navarro hooked up with Allen and Stewart to go up by 21 in the 2nd quarter. Maryvale made it 28 when Huckaby scampered in from 18 yards out.

Highland was resilient in the 2nd half. The scored on their 1st two possessions to keep the game close. RB Trevon Orth got both of the Highland TDs while Maryvale's Jermaine Williams added Maryvale's only score of the 3rd quarter. The score after 3 was Maryvale 34 Highland 14.

Orth added a 3rd TD early in the 4th and Highland had all of the momentum.  Orth also came up big on D, stripping the Maryvale ball carrier and returning inside the Panther 10. Two plays later Mike Madrid dove in from 5 yards out and Highland was only down 6 points.

Maryvale was able to sustain a good drive and squash Highland's chances of a comeback. Huckaby ran tough behind the great blocking of Jermaine Williams and the Maryvale OL stepped up big during thre final drive. Huckaby was bale to add a late score to make the final Maryvale 40 Highland 28.

Maryvale's D came up big in the 1st half and that was the difference in the game. Deyon Bowser and Navarro both came out of the game with injuries and we will have to see what their status for next week is.

Game Balls:

Game to the Maryvale D for forcing a total of 5 turnovers.

I also would like to mention the play of Highland's Trevon Orth who was huge on both sides of the ball.
