Greenway traveled to Goodyear to take on #2 seed Millennium in a 4AI contest. The first half gave every indication that it would be a great game as the Demons attempted to avenge an earlier loss to Millennium. Both teams could not get the ball in the end zone early, until on 4th and 8, with 1:23 left in the 1st, Greenway QB Nathan Hodges hit Dan Oakley for a thirty-one yard TD strike. Less than a minute later Millennium retaliated as junior RB Akio Lloyd took off on a fifty-three yard TD scamper, making the score 7 to 7 at the end of the 1st. Early in the 2nd quarter Hodges would once again strike for the Demons finding Nick Certo for a touchdown pass. The two point conversion failed making the score 13 to 7 Greenway. Wanting to get in on the action Millennium QB Kirtus Brais hit wideout Anthony Dunkerly for a seventy-six yard TD. Millennium hit the PAT and never again trailed making the score 14-13. One minute later Tiger DB Dennis Givens picked a Hodges pass setting up a thirty-one yard Dallas Hunter field goal. Making the score at half Millennium 17 Greenway 13.
The 2nd half saw Aaron Gentry do what he has done his entire high school career, make big plays. Less than two minutes into the half, Gentry intercepted and Greenway pass and returned it forty-four yards to the Greenway two. RB Chance Priddy finished the job scoring on a two yard TD run. PAT good. Millennium 24 Greenway 13. Later in the third, Akio Lloyd would score his second TD, this time a fifteen yard run, with the PAT the score saw Millennium up 31-13 going into the fourth. Senior Nathan Hodges was not ready to call it a season and scored on a ten yard run for the Demons but it would not be enough. Soon after Gentry would pick up a fumble and dash in twelve yards to seal the win for Millennium 38 to 19.
Bottom Line: Greenway had four turnovers, three of the turnover led directly to Millennium scores. Millennium's two platoon system seemed to wear down the Demons who could do little in the second half after a tough fought first half. Millennium once again showed diversity getting offensive contributions from multiple players. The win buys the Tigers a semi-final game with Sabino who defeated Canyon del Oro.
Game Balls: Aaron Gentry made more big plays. This week it was on the defensive side of the ball. He nearly scored on an interception return and did score on a fumble recovery. Nathan Hodges has had a great season and tonight was no different as he had his hand in all three of Greenway's scores. Great job!
