Brophy v. Salpointe

Broncos get past Lancers

The number 7 ranked Salpointe Lancers made the long trip from Tucson to try to avenge a mid season loss to the #2 ranked Brophy Broncos.  It was a tough, back and forth defensive battle and the first points were not put on the board until the middle of the second quarter when sophomore kicker Anthony Palumbo put the Broncos ahead with a 30-yard field goal.

Salpointe made the first mistake of the game and Mike Callaghan of Brophy was there to intercept the arrant pass. Brophy then put together a 13 play 75 yard drive, mostly behind the running of Nick Natale. But it was a pass by Bryan Berens to Bart Stires with 20 seconds left in the half that gave the Broncos a 10-0 half time lead.

The second half started off the same as the first with the game being a back and forth defensive affair. And once again it was Brophy that capitalized on a Salpointe mistake.  Michael Owings recovered a fumble deep in Salpointe territory.  Once again it was Nick Natale that ran the ball into striking distance and once again it was a pass from Bryan Berens for a touchdown. This time the pass was to Matt Smith to give the Broncos a 16-0 lead.

Salpointe was able to answer back with a seven play 65 yard drive. Nicolas Cole finished the drive with a five yard rumble for TD.  PAT was no good. Brophy led at the start of the fourth quarter, 16- 6.

The Broncos took an apparent dominating lead three plays latter after Bryan Berens threw a 70 yard touch down pass to Mike Giannola to push Brophy to a 22-6 lead.

The Lancers would not say die and charged back.  QB Max Fritz quickly ran and passed his way down field. In seven plays he hit Joey Cacciatore for a 34 yard touchdown. Two point try was no good. Brophy 22 Salpointe 12.

Salpointe then kicked an onside kick and recovered.  Five plays later Fritz hit Levess Eafon for 30 yard touchdown pass. Two point try no good. Brophy 22 Salpointe 18.

With six minutes remaining the "Big Moe" had switched to the Salpointe stands.

The Lancers kicked deep this time and had a great defensive series to force Brophy to punt. They returned the punt to the Brophy 47. But with 2:37 Fritz was intercepted but Matt Smith at the Bronco 6. With 2:39 on the clock Brophy need to get at least one first down to run out the clock.  The Lancer D stepped up again to hold the Broncos. Facing a strong D and saddled by a delay of game and motion penalty, the Broncos had to punt from their own 2.  Salpointe returned the punt the Brophy 42. A gallant effort was put up by Max Fritz and the Lancers but they ran out of clock on the Brophy 18.

Final Score Brophy 22, Slpointe 18.

Game Balls:  This was the best game I had seen all season. Both teams were evenly matched. It was a game that featured perhaps the largest match up of linemen this season. Great effort was given by all players. Small mistakes made the difference. Game balls go to the captains of each team to be shared with their teammates.

Bottom Line:  Brophy beat a good team twice.  Next week they face Mesa Mountain View. Both teams have one loss and that was to Westwood. I'm sure they both are happy to be in the bracket they are in as Westwood plays Hamilton.
