After a hard fought first half Brophy pulled away in the 2nd half to secure a spot in the state title game against Hamilton.
After DT/OT Blake Behrens recovered a Mt.View fumble, Brophy was able to march fifty-four yards on six plays and with 6:59 left in the 1st, capping the drive on a sixteen yard Nick Natale run. Mountain View would counter with an eleven play drive that mixed run and pass. Riley Nielsen ran in a score to tie the game 7 to 7. Brophy would come right back as Natale would score his second TD. The PAT was no good making the score at the end of the 1st quarter Brophy 13 Mt.View 7.
In the 2nd Mt. View would take the lead. After a Brophy fumble, the Toros put together a thirteen play drive that saw flea flickers, screens and draws. Getting back to basics the score came on pitch right to Ridge Nielsen for the score. With the PAT, Toros up 14 to 13. After a stop of Brophy on 4th & 2, Mt.View got the ball and was able to hit a forty-three yard field goal, extending their lead to 17 to 13. Brophy returned the favor moving the ball sixty-eight yards in fifty-five seconds. The Broncs hit a field goal making the score at half 17 to 16 Mt.View.
The second half would see Brophy pull away from Mt.View. With 6:51 left in the 3rd Matt Smith caught a Bryan Berens pass and the Broncs converted the 2 point taking the lead 24-17 and never looking back. Smith would score again in the 3rd on fly sweep making the score 31 to 17. In the 4th Rahnee Dennard would add a TD run capping the scoring for Brophy. Mt.View would put up one more score, but it was too little too late. The final Brophy 38 Mt.View 23.
Bottom Line: The Brophy O line paved the way in the second half to open up the lead. Natale and Dennard had room to run and Berens had time to throw. The Brophy D stepped up. The linebacking corp made plays and kept the Nielsens in check. Brophy may be the one team that has the players in the trenches on both sides of the LOS to play with Hamilton. First year coach Scooter Molander has handled high expectation and adversity to get the Broncs to the final. For Mt.View both of the Nielsen boys will be back next year.
Game Ball: The Brophy O-line took care of business on the way to a big offensive night. Previous to this game, the Toro D was only giving up just over ten points a game. The Broncs posted thirty-eight.
