4A2 Title Game: Mingus v. Palo Verde

Titans Run Over the Marauders

4A Division II Championship Game

Palo Verde Titans vs. Mingus Marauders

Titans Run Over the Marauders

Recap:

After seeing the Titan defense shutout #1 Arcadia the previous week, there was some thought that they would be able to at least slow down a potent Mingus offense that has outscored it opponents 277 – 49 in the past 7 games.  That is almost 40 points per game and Palo Verde's swarming defense kept the Marauders to 66 total first half yards, compared to close to 200 yards for the Titans, all rushing.

Palo Verde scored on their opening drive and their running game continued it momentum from last weeks playoff win.  Robert Webster carried the load, finding the creases and slipping tackles.  The Titans always seemed to get the first down when needed.  QB Victor Yates also carried the ball, adding power to compliment Webster's quickness.

The Titan's defense kept continuous pressure on Mingus' QB Jay Arthur, sacking him numerous times and not allowing the big plays.  Palo Verde's Victor Yates and Brandon Johnson always seemed to be making the plays on defense.

HALFTIME: PALO VERDE 12 – MINGUS 0

The second half started huge for the Marauders as Ryan Hauser took the kickoff return to the house, slipping tackles and taking the right angles.  The Marauder defense came out of the half geared to stop the run, brining 8 players near the line.  The Titan's powerful line kept the drive going, even on multiple 4th downs, converting for first downs consistently.  After a personal foul, roughing the kicker on a missed FG, Palo Verde ran on three downs and kicked a successful FG.   Palo Verde's drive took the entire 3rd quarter, scoring with 11:56 left in the game. On the ensuing drive by Mingus, Arthur fumbled the ball which was recovered by the Titan's Johnson for the games first turnover. Palo Verde would punt the ball, though Mingus was unable to produce much, attempting a fake punt attempt unsuccessfully.  Palo Verde would again eat up the clock on its drive, making key 4th downs until they were stopped on a 4th and 2 at the 30 yard line.

With little time remaining, Mingus was unable to produce much, though putting together a tough drive against the stalwart Titan defense.

FINAL: PALO VERDE 15 – Mingus 7

Bottom Line:

Palo Verde's defense was too much, even for this potent Mingus offense.  Mingus only points came on a kickoff return for a touchdown.  Hats off to the entire Titan defensive squad.

Nobody picked Palo Verde to be the last team standing. They capped off a sensational 11-2 season with a win over a talented Mingus team. PV will have some rebuilding to do next year as all 11 of their offensive starters were seniors but lets congratulate the Palo Verde Titans player and coaching staff for becoming Arizona's 1st ever 4A2 state champion.

Game Balls:

Who else but the defensive unit of the Palo Verde Titans.  They stopped an impressive offense and allowed their offense to control the ball and clock.  Hats off to Victor Yates and Brandon Johnson especially.

Little RB Robert Webster was the main cog in PV's rushing attack. He had nearly 100 yards rushing in the 1st quarter, including a 55 yard TD run on the 2nd play from scrimmage.
