North Canyon rebounds to win title

5A2 Title Game

Centennial v. North Canyon

12/3/2005

Recap:

Both teams looked nervous early as both offenses sputtered a little but it was Centennial opened up the scoring with a Tom Ramsey safety to put the Coyotes up 2-0 early.

Warren Johnson answered with an excellent return on the free kick that put Centennial in scoring position at the Rattler's 8 yard line. Centennial was unable to capitalize and ended up missing not one but two field goals after a roughing call. End of 1 it was Centennial 2 North Canyon 0.

It was Warren Johnson again with an excellent return early in the 2nd quarter that put the Coyotes on the board again. He returned a punt 40 yards to paydirt.

North Canyon was able to establish a run game on the ensuing possession and marched 55 yards for their 1st score of the night. Capped off by a 1 yard Anthony Llanos TD run that was set up by a 40 yard Sherrod Austin run. Score 9-7 at halftime in favor of Centennial.

North Canyon opened up with a nice opening drive as they marched all the way down inside the 5 yard line. On 4th and 1 it seemed as though Austin was stopped behind LOS by Tom Ramsey but as Austin went down he fumbled the ball into the endzone and it was recovered by Brett McKendrick of NC for a TD and the Rattlers had their first lead of the game. After the 2 point conversion the score was now 15-9 NC.

Centennial was able to answer right back, using a strong passing game to march down the field and score on an 11 yard QB Shane Mascarenas draw. Score after 3 was 16-15 Centennial.

The game changed early in the 4th quarter when the Rattler's DE Will Osolinsky recovered a fumble and returned it to midfield to give NC the momentum. NC moved the ball down the field and scored on 4th and 6 as Austin ran in from 19 yards out to put NC back in the lead 21-16 after the PAT was no good.

The Rattler's D came up huge again on the next possession as Osolinsky recovered a blocked punt and returned it to the 19 yard line. Two plays later, QB Tim Bowling scored on a 11 yard run to make the score 27-16. All of Centennial's hopes came to an end when Brady Shimek intercepted Mascarenas late to seal the deal.

Final- North Canyon 27 Centennial 16

Bottomline:

It looked like Centennial might put the game away early, looking dominate in the 1st quarter but were unable to capitalize on scoring possessions. Once North Canyon was able to get their ground game on path, the Rattlers effectively and efficiently put points on the board while eating up clock. It seemed as though Centennial was never able to gain any rhythm offensively after the 1st quarter.

Game Balls:

North Canyon FB/LB Anthony Llanos pounded the ball the ball effectively all night rushing over 150 yards and 1 score.

Centennial DT Tom Ramsey came up big for the Coyotes with a safety and wreaked havoc on the LOS.
