Recruiting Season - 2007 Prospects - Guards

Recruiting season is just around the corner which means PrepAZ.com will bring you our top prospects across the State. The Top 2007 Guards kick off our recruiting coverage. The 2007 Wings/Forwards will be published this Thursday...

PrepAZ.com begins the recruiting season this week with our 2007 prospects and "players to watch", heading into the spring evaluation period for colleges across the Country.

We start off with our 2007 Guards Prospect List.  This August we will separate the Point Guards/Off Guards after we get a chance to evaluate them in a high level competitive setting but for now we will group them together.

The Ranking System:

Each top prospect will have our projected level they can play at depending on continued development.

High Major Prospect: Definite HM player

High Major Follow: Mid Major prospect that High Majors should follow

Mid Major Prospect: Definite MM player

Mid Major Follow: Low Major prospect that Mid Majors should follow

Low Major Prospect: Definite Low Major Player

Low Major Follow: Division II prospect that Low Majors should follow

NR: Not rated at this time

Top 7 Guards:

  1. Jerryd BaylessA top 5 across the Country who has committed to Arizona.
  2. Ty Abbott – Injury kept this MM prospect from shining for most of the 2005-2006 season, but we think his long arms, court awareness and athletic ability could land him a MM scholie with continued development and experience.  Nice touch from 17ft. and will defend like no other in Arizona next year. Abbott has developed interest but the Mid Majors will expect to see results this spring/summer.
  3. Brad Carroll – An unknown among college coaches but not for long.  Carroll is projected as a MM follow.  Slow feet and poor lateral quick's will hinder this solid LM player but extensive physical conditioning and continued ball skill development could elevate his stock over the next 6 months.  Handled the PG slot for Corona in the semi's and looked comfortable handling the ball.  This spring/summer is critical for Carroll. Big Sky will be calling!
  4. Kendall Wallace – Solid Guard we have projected as a LM prospect.  Quickness and the ability to handle the ball against bigger stronger athletes are in question.  Decision making is solid and the ability to see the floor put Wallace at the LM level.
  5. Mickey McConnell Committed to New Mexico.  Solid PG who can score.  We have McConnell rated as a LM Prospect.  Primarily due to his size and strength.  Can shoot it from 18ft. but at NM will be asked to run the show among big time athletes.  His transition to that role will be tough.
  6. Louis Barraza – Long armed athlete who is more of a wing than guard.  His development with the ball and experience in the backcourt will help this spring/summer.  Can shoot it from 17 but looks more comfortable attacking the glass in traffic. Solid defender.
  7. Garrett Lever – Low Major follow that can run, jump and shoot with the best of them.  Size and experience handling the PG slot hurt this scoring machine from Desert Vista.  The spring/summer is critical for Lever to show he can handle the ball in traffic against bigger, stronger athletes.  Decision making a key!
