#1 Mingus Edges #2 Sunnyslope in Opener

A rematch of last year's semifinal, Mingus beat Sunnyslope to advance to the 4A II championship last season. This year Sunnyslope looks to return the favor by winning this big time matchup of 4A II powers in this year's season opener.

The action begins in the first quarter Sunnyslope struck first when quarterback Sean Maraz ran it in from 5 yards out to give Sunnyslope an 8-0 lead with 5:33 left in the first.

In the second Mingus quarterback Brian Libby ran it in from 3 yards out to make it 8-6 with 8:42 left.  Mingus took the lead in the second and never gave it back after a 38 yard pass by Brian Libby to Layton Dickerson to make the score 12-8.

In the third Mingus and Sunnyslope traded possessions until Layton Dickerson had a nice run play that went 12 yards for the score.  That was Dickerson's second score of the night to make the score 19-8 in favor of Mingus.

But in the fourth Sunnyslope wasn't going down without a fight.  Beau Grado got 8 points back single handedly when he returned a punt 70 yards and made a catch for the 2 point conversion to make the score 19-16 with just over 7 minutes left in the fourth.  John Miskiel added to the Mingus lead when he punched one in from 2 yards out with 2:48 left to make the score 26-16.  Sunnyslope had to score fast and they did.  Sunnyslope quarterback Sean Maraz connects with Chad Corley for a long TD pass to cut the Mingus lead to only 2 points with just under 2 minutes left.  Sunnyslope ran out of time and Mingus ran the clock out and wins the game with a final of 26-24.

Despite the loss Sunnyslope head coach Dallas Hickman said "We were a little disorganized ... but there were some positives in this game"

Layton Dickerson had quite a game receiver and running the ball. He ended up with two touchdowns to help Mingus defeat Sunnyslope.
