Two old friends on a new team heading into battle together isn't anything usual for this duo who have been teammates since the 6th grade. Both are moving from a Santa Rita program that looked to be primed to contend for a championship next year to a brand new and developing Cienega program under Coach Darren Cross.
All the Bob Cats come from the Rita Ranch area so when the new Cienega High School opened up the Rita Ranch players who were going to various other schools (Catalina Foothills, Santa Rita, and Sahuaro) had their own school.
Cienega is a new 4A school located about 15 miles southeast of Tucson and are playing a varsity basketball team for the first time this year so not much would be normally expected, but these two warriors change that thinking.
Even though the Bob Cats took their lumps this summer it was obvious by the end of the summer that the Bob Cats behind Larry and Del were turning into a very good team.
The team is learning to play together and defining their roles. Along with Larry and Del, Catalina Foothills transfer Chris Abraham are the only three players who have claimed their starting positions other two are still open for competition.
At 5'11" Larry and the 6'0" Del have developed their skills compliment each other over the past few years.. Larry is very strong and is almost unstoppable going to the hoop and is one of the best rebounders in town especially on the offense end. A vocal leader on the floor his leadership is an extension of Coach Cross. Larry's primary role is to control the tempo on both the offensive and defensive ends, limit turnovers and get everybody involved. Larry is dedicated to improve his outside shot and decision making.
Del is one of the Bob Cats primary outside threats, but is just as capable taking the ball to the hole. Del's leadership style is more by example and is the defense stopper for the Bob Cats. Del's ball handling skills and ability to run the Bob Cats motion offense makes it impossible for teams to focus on just stopping one of the duo. A very good shooter already Del is working hard improve is shot and raise his defense to another level to meet the challenges the team will face in upcoming season.
Del and Larry gives Coach Cross the luxury of having interchangeable guards who provide senior leadership. They are two young men who have more than basketball going for them. This should be a break out year for both and a good showing this year should get them some offers to play after High School and it would be shame to break-up these two friends.
Cienega is in the Sonoran Region with Marana so one of the best games this year will be when the Bob Cats and the perennial 4A powerhouse Marana get together next year. This should develop into a hot rivalry almost overnight.
