Brett Collins. SF Mt. Pointe
The feel good story of the year! Take this kid, who from the outside looking in seemed to be as frustrated as you can get last season. The talk, the injuries, the crap everyone at Mt. Pointe put up with last season. Collins used it to his advantage and has shocked the AZ hoops scene by landing him the #3 SF ranking in the West. We all heard of the great summer tour, but how did he do it? I sure don't know, and frankly don't care. It's his own personal success story that only a select few know the how's and why's of it all. What is remarkable is that Brett proved to everyone, hard work and passion will be rewarded with a 6 figure scolie to a high major program!
The basketball skill and hard work are secondary. The mental toughness and commitment are truly the story with Collins. When I coached and recruited I had a corny little scenario I used when evaluating a player. It goes like this:
If I dropped off 12 players in the middle of the desert, and left them with no water or food, who would make it out alive. That is whom I would sign. You can be greatly skilled, but without the mental toughness to carry you through the battle, it's over baybee. And I for one know Collins would be carrying the whole bunch out the desert on his back.
Sound stupid huh? If it does, and you're a player, good luck to ya. A player like Collins will crush you in crunch time. And that is why he has overcome adversity and turned it into a positive and that toughness alone will carry him to a great career regardless of where he goes.
I have never spoken to Brett, and don't even know if he visits here, but if there was a "comeback player of the year", he is it. If there is a "biggest heart" award, he is it. If there is a model for ALL HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS to follow to attain your goals, he is it.
We have all heard the schools recruiting him, and as always it seems ASU is on hold in taking this kid. UNBELIEVABLE! Coach Evans, go ahead and sign that Cali player. I know, if ever a time in the next 4 years Collins has a chance to play the Devils, you and the whole ASU community will be sorry!
This kid is a winner!
